A man accused of being indecently dressed and disobeying police orders has been remanded in custody. Zere Negasi Gebrehiwot, 28, from Eritrea, was also charged with reviling, threatening or causing bodily harm to two police officers, and disturbing public peace in the early morning hours on Sunday. Inspector Elliott Magro prosecuted the man, who holds a Greek residence permit. While the validity of the arrest was not contested and the case was adjourned, legal aid Dustin Camilleri reserved the right to request bail at a later stage. Читать дальше...

A salesman accused of kidnapping and injuring another man in his Qormi garage was found to be hosting several other people in the garage, a court heard on Sunday. Inspectors told a court that they had found people living inside the Triq il-Mejjilla garage owned by Renald Baldacchino, “for reasons only he knows”. Mr Baldacchino, a 38-year-old who works in sales, was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to arresting, slightly injuring and threatening Pierre Sammut in a garage on Triq il-Mejjilla. Big on small cars

As a young boy, old motors were never on the horizon of Pierre Spiteri, who always had a roving eye on the mainly modern and powerful four-wheel models belonging to that era. This proximity led him to develop a keen interest in things technical and mechanical, which he mainly self-taught. “I remember doing most of the necessary maintenance and service required by the Datsun which my father Victor used to drive as his daily car,” he says. “Although I studied electronics at school, yet what was beneath... Teen boys sexually abused in exchange for food and money

A 70-year-old man was jailed for three years on Sunday after he admitted to having sexually abused two 15-year-old boys, giving them money or food in exchange for oral sex. Police were put on John Zammit’s tracks by an anonymous tip-off and the accused subsequently admitted to the charges while being interrogated by police. Mr Zammit, a Valletta resident, worked part-time at a pastizzi shop, a court heard.  Asked by magistrate Audrey Demicoli about the frequency of such acts, inspector Joseph Busuttil... An English corner in Rome

Before Babington’s Tea Rooms opened in 1893 in the Eternal City, the only place where you could get tea in Italy was from a chemist. Kevin Pilley reports. When in Rome you must do what more Romans are doing. And have some ‘White Passion’, a very more-ish ‘Blue Lady’ and a large slice of the Commonwealth.  When in the Eternal City, turn your back on all the froth, ignore the Arabica beans, the ‘baristas’ and their ‘moka’ machines, scorn the lattes and reserve a table, a three-tier cake stand and order some traditional... What works best – investing in sectors or countries?

A diversified portfolio across regions and sectors can offer healthy returns at a lower risk, partly because the negative performance of some constituents can be offset by the positive contribution of the best performers. One way in which investors generally try to outperform financial markets is by investing higher portions of their investable funds in countries whose economies are expected to outpace the average global growth while reducing exposures in countries that are expected to face weaker economic cycles. 'Did Malta's bad reputation attract Venezuela money-laundering scheme?': Delia

Opposition leader Adrian Delia on Sunday questioned if Malta’s bad reputation helped attract a $1.2 billion scheme to launder funds from Venezuela’s state-owned oil company. A Sliema-based private wealth management firm, Portmann Capital Management is being investigated for its role in the scheme. Speaking on Net FM, Dr Delia said that if Malta had proven itself to be a tough jurisdiction that clamped down on money-laundering, it would not attract such schemes. Dr Delia asked what steps the government... Читать дальше...

UK prepares satellite system to rival EU's Galileo - Sunday Telegraph

Britain is to start work on its own satellite navigation system to rival the European Union's Galileo project because the UK's access to sensitive security information could be restricted after Brexit, the Sunday Telegraph reported. Galileo, a €10 billion satellite programme being developed by the EU as a rival to the US Global Positioning System, has emerged as a flashpoint between Britain and the EU, which is already beginning to treat Britain as an outsider. Britain's finance minister Philip Hammond... Читать дальше...

Muscat to Salvini: 'Politics is not done by tweets'

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat criticised Italy’s deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini on Sunday morning, saying “politics is not done by tweets but through persuasion”. Dr Muscat made this remark in the wake of the ongoing stand-off involving a group of 137 migrants which are not being allowed to disembark at the port of Catania after being intercepted by the Italian navy vessel Diciotti. Italy is insisting that it will not budge from its position until EU members states agree to share the migrants among themselves. Читать дальше...

Earn your stripes

“Don’t it always seem to go / That you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.” Joni Mitchell, arch-priestess of the hippy movement, might have been singing about the environment but, somewhat ironically, her words ring true for capitalism, and its cousin, globalisation. These two forces have done much more than shape the modern world – they have proven more effective at combating the four horsemen of the apocalypse than any other system of government or economics. We live in a time of unprecedented global peace... Читать дальше...

How to buy a designer item from eBay

Harbouring a host of designer and vintage pieces that you cannot always find elsewhere and with great prices to boot, there are not many sites like auction giant eBay. I’ve been receiving many questions about what to look out for when trying to find that once-in-a-lifetime deal, so I thought I’d compile a small list of things one should pay attention to when journeying through the eBay world. Check the seller’s feedback: The seller’s feedback is as important as the item itself. If the seller is listed as having zero feedback... Читать дальше...

From 'shell of shells' to damp squib: petard always had a high chance of failure

There was no more than a 50 per cent chance that the “shell of shells” – the largest petard ever manufactured in Malta – would be successful, according to fireworks enthusiasts. The petard of record-breaking size failed to light up the heavens on Friday night, to the dismay of thousands who had driven to the outskirts of Żurrieq to watch the anticipated spectacle. Instead, the firework appeared to go off just as it was exiting its base on a barge some three kilometres off the coast of Wied iż-Żurrieq at around 10pm... Читать дальше...

Proctor & Gamble tries to trademark LOL, WTF and other internet acronyms

One of the world’s biggest firms has filed legal paperwork in an attempt to patent internet acronyms such as LOL, FML and WTF. Proctor & Gamble wants to use the various acronyms to market their cleaning and air-freshening products to millenials, Bloomberg reported. The popular acronyms have been part of internet language for well over a decade and the company is likely to face an uphill battle to convince the US patent and trademark office that it should be granted commercial exclusivity over them. Australia's foreign minister steps down after losing party battle for top seat

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said on Sunday she has resigned from new Prime Minister Scott Morrison's Cabinet, two days after a bruising leadership battle that toppled former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull. Bishop announced she would move to the backbench and had not yet decided whether to contest the next election, which is due by May 2019. That decision could have serious implications for Morrison's government, which has a parliamentary majority of only one seat. Morrison emerged as... Читать дальше...

Strong women, hot opera

As the Salzburg Summer Festival comes to an end in five days’ time, Andreas Weitzer rounds up some of the performances that have left most of a mark on audiences. The Salzburger Festspiele, taking place in Mozart’s city of birth every summer since 1920, is for many the world’s most prestigious opera, concert and drama festival. Expectations are high and visitors are usually hard to please; I have seen productions where protesters disrupted performances with boos and whistling. This year, festival... Читать дальше...

Erdogan’s Turkey: The Great Seizure of Malta?

It is part of our DNA to look at Turkey without much commiseration when we see her in trouble. The Great Siege of 1565 is an integral part of Malta’s self-understanding as a nation. As a Catholic country we are troubled to see Turkey’s Christians in retreat and alarmed about the rapid erosion of secularism. As democrats we worry about Erdogan’s blatant disregard for human rights, his disrespect of parliamentary opposition and the rule of law. As retail investors though, we should be alarmed by the... Illustrating the lives of animals

Is it true that cows like eating spaghetti with tomato sauce? Is it true that horses sleep on hammocks after a long, hard day? Can a rooster sing opera? Do giraffes eat clouds? And do zebras love their cup of tea? These and other teasing questions are tackled in Annimaloskopju, a new series of boardbooks recently published by Merlin Publishers. Non-fiction for the very young is very much sought after, but very hard to find in Maltese. L-Annimali tas-Savana and L-Annimali tar-Razzett blend cheeky... Читать дальше...
