A female loggerhead turtle was found dead with its shell shattered in three places just off the coast of Sliema on Sunday afternoon. The marine reptile’s carcass was picked up by Transport Malta’s maritime section and brought in to St Julian’s, Nature Trust said on their Facebook page. “The turtle was approximately 17 years old and died after being hit by a boat,” Nature Trust said, adding an appeal to boat owners to “please sail carefully”. The only remaining stork from a sizeable flock should be taken out of Malta to keep it safe, the Ornis committee has decided. No fewer than 18 white storks made their way to Malta two weeks ago but hunters targeted the flock immediately. The number quickly dwindled after five were confirmed shot. BirdLife conservation manager Nicholas Barbara said the rest had probably become victims of illegal hunting as well. A 33-year-old man who police found asleep in a garden in Marsa has been jailed for five months after pleading guilty to breaching bail conditions. Defence counsel Dustan Camilleri said in court that Fabian Sciriha, who has no fixed address, admitted that he had never signed the bail book, but explained that he had just been kicked out of his girlfriend’s apartment in Marsa and was also dealing with substance abuse issues. Libraries have fewer members but more people are borrowing books, official figures show. More than 910,000 books were loaned from all libraries last year, up eight per cent over 2016. Book loans continued to increase between 2015 and 2017, totalling more than 130,000 books over the period. However, new library members dipped from 6,251 in 2015 to 5,119 last year. Scripts, such as the Liber Pontificalis, confirm that liturgical vestments, enriched and ornately embroidered, can be traced back to early Christianity. Nonetheless, no special ordinances have ever been issued by the Church in this regard, either as to their material, colour or design.
