An 18-year-old student from Georgia solved six Rubik's Cubes under water in one breath on Friday, in a bid to set a new Guinness World Record. A group of 171 migrants who refused help by Maltese rescuers remain stranded off Lampedusa awaiting instructions by the Italian authorities. The boat got embroiled in fresh controversy between Italy and Malta over who should assume responsibility for the migrants. Malta retorted on Thursday that the boat was not in distress and the migrants were picked up closer to the Italian island. The man identified as the main suspect in the gruesome murder of a young Dutch woman told investigators he had “freaked out” during an argument, a court heard on Friday. MIDI share price extends rally

The MSE Equity Price Index climbed by 0.27% to 4,310.498 points as several equities performed positively while only FIMBank trended lower. Despite Friday's gains, the local equity index retreated by 0.73% during this shortened week, mostly driven by the drops in share prices of FIMBank (-5.5%), HSBC (-4.8%) and BOV (-1.3%). Repairs to historic aqueduct damaged by reckless truck driver

Repair works began in Mrieħel on Thursday on part of the 17th century Wignacourt Aqueduct, built by the Knights of St John. A section of one of the arches was damaged when the driver of a concrete-mix truck ignored traffic signs and tried to go through an arch with his massive vehicle. Elderly scooter driver in serious condition after accident

A 77-year-old man was seriously hurt after the Yamaha 80 scooter he was driving was involved in a collision in Kirkop on Friday at 9.30am. Police said that a car driven by a 38-year-old woman from Kirkop was involved in the accident. Investigations are still underway.

Homeless migrants sleep on pallets and mattresses in nearby farm

Pictures taken on Friday show how some of the migrants who were evicted from a former cattle farm in Qormi have set up mattresses and blankets in nearby fields.  Some 120 immigrants, many of whom came to Malta from Italy, were kicked out of the farm where they were living on Monday. Air France-KLM shares fell on Friday in response to the hostile reception from unions to the company's new boss Benjamin Smith, while the airline's Dutch pilots threatened to strike over working conditions. Clumps of giant reed, which are an invasive species, probably bore the brunt of the flames which have been burning at Il-Maqluba for the past two days, the Environment and Resources Authority said. Consumer price inflation at 2.1 per cent in July

Consumer price inflation reached 2.1 per cent in July when compared to the same month the previous year, new data released on Friday by the National Statistics Office has shown. The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices, which measures monthly price changes in the cost of purchasing a representative basket of goods and services, rose by 0.1 percentage points when compared to June. Denied bail after allegedly stabbing two in Paceville

A man who allegedly attacked two others with a knife on the streets of Paceville last Wednesday night has been remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to charges against him. Rapid clean-up at Ġnejna Bay

Beachgoers at Ġnejna Bay were met on Thursday with a considerable amount of algae and metal bins overflowing with burnt charcoal from the previous evening’s BBQs. Cleansing Department personnel were on site as soon as Times of Malta raised the matter with them. Director general Ramon Deguara explained that the bins were still too hot when the beach cleaner tried to empty them in the morning. The algae is expected to be removed on Friday as this has to be done manually due to the turtle eggs on the beach.
