Hurricane Lane, threatening a direct hit as Hawaii's worst storm in a quarter century, on Thursday churned toward Oahu, the island with the largest population, as schools, government offices and business closed and residents stocked up on supplies. Packing sustained winds of up to 215 km per hour, Lane could dump 25-50 cm of rain, triggering flash floods and landslides, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. "Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion," the NWS Central... Читать дальше...

Turkish lira crisis unlikely to affect Malta

The crisis in Turkey is unlikely to affect Malta, the Central Bank of Malta reassured, even though two of the Turkish banks here have balance sheets that represent 146 per cent of GDP. In Malta, there are three licensed banks, which are either partly owned by other European institutions and listed on Borsa Istanbul, or have a controlling shareholder who is of Turkish origin. One is licensed in Malta as a subsidiary – Yapi Kredi – while two others are branches of Turkish ones. The two branches have... Читать дальше...

Britons living in EU could lose access to UK bank accounts in no-deal Brexit

Britons living in the European Union could lose access to their UK bank accounts and businesses on the continent could be cut off from investment banks in London if there is a no-deal Brexit, the British government said on Thursday. In a document detailing contingency planning if Britain leaves the EU in March with no transition deal, the government said unilateral action on several fronts could only minimise disruption up to a point. Over a million Britons living abroad may not be able to access... Читать дальше...

Catholic conference hears appeal for Church to welcome gays

A Catholic conference on family issues that Pope Francis is due to address this weekend heard a plea from a US priest on Thursday for the Church to welcome gay members, who he said had been made to feel like lepers. At the first major speech on the issue at the World Meeting of Families, which is organised by the Vatican every three years and is being held in Dublin this year, US Jesuit priest James Martin told delegates that excluding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Catholics violated the teachings of Jesus Christ. UK food exports to EU may be stalled by "no deal" Brexit - NFU

Britain could be barred from exporting some food to the European Union for months if it leaves the bloc without a deal, the National Farmers Union said on Thursday after the government published reports on that scenario. One government paper on the possible impact on organic food said British businesses would only be able to export to the EU if they were certified by an organic control body recognised and approved by the EU to operate in the UK. Applications cannot be made, however, until Britain... Читать дальше...

Watch: Gżira mayor warns of bars, restaurants on main roads

It did not make sense to have outdoor bars and restaurants next to a main road, Gżira mayor Conrad Borg Manché said. The stretch of the Strand from Manoel Island bridge to the Ferries has already got 21 of these outdoor areas, over a dozen of which were given their permits last year. And with dozens more restaurants there, the potential for yet more to extend over the pavement to the road was worrying, he said. The mayor was speaking in the context of two developments which have brought the issue back to the fore... Читать дальше...

President Donald Trump expressed sympathy for his former campaign manager Paul Manafort and said he would remain "uninvolved" after he attacked Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the US Justice Department in an interview broadcast on Thursday. Trump intensified his criticism of the Justice Department in a Fox News interview taped on Wednesday as the White House grappled to respond to Tuesday's conviction of Manafort on multiple fraud counts and a plea deal struck by Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen that implicated the president. Potatoes have roots in a healthy lifestyle

Potatoes are apparently far from being flavour of the month. Rejected by young people and “clean eaters”, sales are plummeting. But what has the potato done to deserve being treated so distastefully? Reports claim that millennials prefer rice and noodles, and think that potatoes will make them fat. According to The Grocer magazine potato sales have decreased by 5.4% in the last four years, while sales of rice and noodles have risen by 30%. But the potato has a proud history. One of the most common and versatile root vegetables... Читать дальше...

Bayer's Monsanto sued by 8,000 plaintiffs on glyphosate

Bayer said the number of US lawsuits brought against newly acquired Monsanto has risen to about 8,000 from 5,200 previously, after Monsanto was ordered to pay damages for not warning of alleged cancer risks of glyphosate-based weedkillers. "The number of plaintiffs in both state and federal litigation is approximately 8,000 as of end-July. These numbers may rise or fall over time but our view is that the number is not indicative of the merits of the plaintiffs’ cases," chief executive Werner Baumann... Читать дальше...

Insight: Why no one thought to close Genoa's crumbling bridge

People living under the Italian bridge that collapsed last week with the loss of 43 lives had known for years it was crumbling: pieces kept falling on their homes and cars. A month earlier, residents met officials in charge of maintaining the bridge in Genoa to find out what was being done. The 1.2km-long suspension bridge, part of a privately run motorway linking the port city with France, had been slowly eroding in the sea air for decades, requiring non-stop maintenance, but life had become intolerable for residents. Planned fireball at Żurrieq harmful to seabirds

The planned firing of the giant fireball known as 'The Shell of Shells' at Żurrieq on Friday will impact Natura 2000 sites, particularly Filfla, BirdLife Malta warned on Thursday. "Seabirds inhabiting Filfla which are currently during their nesting periods (namely Scopoli’s Shearwater and the Mediterranean Storm-petrel) are very sensitive to both light and noise pollution, to the point that even fireworks or light along the south-west coast of Malta already have an effect on this seabird haven," the NGO said. Work is under way to repair the deteriorating Marsa-Ħamrun flyover in a €200,000 project which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
