EU Commission, not ECB, presidency is priority for Merkel - Handelsblatt

Chancellor Angela Merkel is focusing on securing the European Commission presidency for a German candidate, rather than backing Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann to succeed Mario Draghi at the helm of the European Central Bank (ECB), Handelsblatt reported. Such a move could prove significant because it would appear to reduce the prospect of Weidmann, the ECB's most hawkish policymaker, taking over leadership of the ECB just as it is likely to start exiting its ultra accommodative policy stance. At the same time... Читать дальше...

Italy's Salvini resists pressure to allow migrants to disembark

Italian far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini on Wednesday resisted increasing pressure to allow 177 migrants who have been held on a coast guard ship in a Sicilian port for two days to disembark. A public backlash against the seaborne newcomers helped put Salvini and his anti-immigration League party into office in June, alongside the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement. The coast guard's Diciotti ship is docked in the port of Catania, but Salvini has said he will not let the migrants - including... Читать дальше...

The superintendence has also expressed concern that a building earmarked for demolition could have cultural value. However, the heritage watchdog did not object to the project in view of its “urgency”. Australian PM Turnbull risks a second leadership challenge

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull clung to power on Wednesday as rebel Liberal party lawmakers pressed for a second leadership contest just a day after he narrowly survived a challenge from former home minister Peter Dutton. Turnbull, whose Liberal Party is the senior partner in the coalition government, had won a party-room vote by 48 to 35 on Tuesday, but the unconvincing victory had left him vulnerable to another challenge. Australian lawmakers told reporters that party rebels were petitioning for another vote as early as Wednesday... Читать дальше...

Sobriety tags: how alcohol monitoring could become the new norm

In a bid to crack down on alcohol-related violence, the British government is preparing a new strategy to reduce the risks associated with excessive drinking. When he was in office, London’s deputy mayor for policing, Kit Malthouse (now housing minister), scoured the world for a novel answer to such violence. And the solution he found in the US was 24/7 Sobriety. Читать дальше...
