Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were tackling a fire in a four-storey building in London's Bayswater area on Thursday, the city's fire department said in a statement. Half of the first and half of the second floor of the building were alight, the London Fire Brigade said. The cause of the fire was not known at this stage.

Three people were injured in a traffic accident in Naxxar on Thursday evening. The police said the accident happened in Triq Margaret Murray at 6pm when an Alfa Romeo Giulietta that was being driven by a 36-year-old man from Mosta was involved in a collision with a DAF truck that was being driven by a 55-year-old man from Fgura. Two women, aged 26 and 27, as well as a six-year-old girl were in the car. The police were awaiting the results of special forensic tests to establish if a bomb at a Għargħur farm in May was planted there or was being assembled, sources close to the investigators said. Skolasajf employees have been informed that their salaries will be delayed, the Union of Professional Educators - Voice of the Workers said. It said in a statement it received various complaints from members that the Foundation for Educational Services intended to issue salaries late in September and October. According to an email they received, officials notified employees “of an inconvenient delay”. The initial payment for those commencing Skola Sajf on July 12 were projected for September 7. Torrential rains and landslides killed at least 24 people in southern India on Thursday, with the authorities opening the shutters of 24 water reservoirs in an unprecedented move to prevent potentially disastrous breaches, officials said. Trident Park Ltd is relocating seven palm trees to ensure that no damage is caused to the trees during the construction process currently underway on the old Farsons Brewery site in Mrieħel. They consist of two large and three small Phoenix Canariensis and two large Washingtonia Filifera, with the larger trees thought to be some 70 years old. Dutch maritime authorities have agreed that an NGO rescue ship impounded in Malta might not have been adequately registered to conduct such risky operations, sources said on Wednesday. A 33-year-old woman was grievously injured in a traffic accident on Thursday. The police said the accident happened in Triq Luqa Briffa, Żejtun at 12.45pm. The woman, who is from Marsascala, was hit by an Isuzu Elf that was being driven by a 28-year-old man from Żejtun. The woman was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Trees in an afforestation project at Ta’ Pinu that were left to wither and die  may soon get some much-needed water, a spokesman for the Gozo Ministry has said. Launched in December 2015, the Ġnien il-Paċi (Peace Garden), as it is called, is located at Għammar Hill, which overlooks the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary. The garden was inaugurated by then Gozo Minister Anton Refalo as part of an EU-funded project. A Transport Malta official who had been given a suspended sentence and a general perpetual interdiction over the fabrication of a certificate of competency has been completely cleared on appeal. The offices of the Housing Authority in Floriana were evacuated on Thursday afternoon because of a small fire in a room on the roof. The blaze was reported at about 1.45 at Triq Pietro Floriani and fire-fighters were called. No one was injured.

Spanish rescue boat Open Arms arrived in the southern port of Algeciras on Thursday with 87 migrants the crew said they had rescued off the coast of Libya. The charity Proactiva Open Arms operates in the sea between Libya and southern Europe in a mission aimed at aiding migrants who have found themselves in trouble during an attempt to cross the sea from northern Africa. The average sea temperature around Malta last month was almost a degree higher than the norm, data issued by the Meteorological Office on Thursday showed. The air temperature went from a minimum of 20.2˚C at the beginning of the month to a high of 35.7˚C. The average sea temperature for the month was a full 0.9˚C higher than the norm of 24.7˚C.
