A Ħal Far open-centre resident has been charged with assaulting and violently resisting two police constables in Marsa while drunk. The incident happened on Thursday at around noon in Triq Balbi. Abdulnasir Mohammed Abdulahi, 28, from Somalia, who has refugee status, was arraigned under arrest before Magistrate Claire-Louise Stafrace and pleaded not guilty. A French student in Malta on holiday landed in hot water on Friday after he got involved in a fight in Paceville which left a Maltese man with grievous injuries. Yannis Meherzi, 24, from Lyon, told the police he was drunk at the time of the altercation, which is thought to have been triggered when the alleged victim bumped into the accused. The incident happened on St Rita steps at around 3am on Friday. The landmark statue of Our Lady of Hope located in the centre of Ramla Bay in Gozo will undergo restoration works following planning permission by the Planning Commission. The original statue dates back to 1881 and was built by John Gauci from Xagħra. It is made from concrete and rendered with oil-based paint. It stands on a pedestal made of globigerina limestone plastered over with a cream painted cement layer. Israel has allowed the medicinal use of cannabis for some time now and the green rush is taking hold. Over 200 firms have applied for a permit to produce and export marijuana as Israel vies to be world leader in cannabis commercialisation.

Mġarr ix-Xini has been declared the first White Flag beach in Gozo. A White Flag beach represents a beach fully cleaned from plastic and other non-degradable waste. Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana said more work should be done for the standard to be reached by all other bays in Gozo within a few years, starting with Marsalforn and Daħlet Qorrot in Nadur. Other white flag beaches in Malta are Wied iż-Żurrieq and Golden Bay.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat paid homage to Malta’s second Prime Minister, Francesco Buhagiar, on the occasion of the 84th anniversary of his death. The Prime Minister laid flowers on the late PM's grave at the Addolorata Cemetery. Dr Buhagiar was elected to the Legislative Assembly in the 1921 and 1924 elections in the interests of the Unione Popolare Maltese. A new agency that will consolidate every environment-related directorate and entity was formally launched on Friday. The agency, Ambjent Malta, would be geared towards improving people’s quality of life and their appreciation of the environment, minister Jose Herrera said. Ambjent Malta will take over from the Directorate for Parks, Afforestation and Countryside Restoration, and will also take on responsibility for Natura 2000 areas. Two films are being shown tonight in Howard Gardens, Mdina, as part of Utopian Nights: Inside the Border. These are The Suffering of Others, a Self-Examination (16 minutes) and The Dubai in Me – Rendering the World (77 minutes). The short film is an eyewitness account during the shoot of a rescue operation in the Mediterranean. The other was shot on location in 2009 and deals with the business model of Dubai. There are no current plans to restore the centuries-old quarantine building in Valletta, which is gradually collapsing into the sea, the Times of Malta has been told. Last month, architectural heritage practitioner Edward Said warned that remnants of the Barriera could be lost forever if the authorities did not take action fast. Senior ministers in Italy's government were expected to meet on Friday to discuss next year's budget, two sources said, amid divisions in the cabinet over spending plans. Every Friday, Mġarr harbour is hosting live music events, covering a broad spectrum of genres – from choral and band music to rock and jazz. Two stages have been set up along the harbour area. Performing tonight is the band Rock Side Kick. Other artists scheduled to perform this summer are Band Antoine, Upper Lip, Michela Pace, Jazz Do, Kersten Graham, Sarah Claire Saliba and Sarah Bonnici and Band. The Malta Union of Teachers is objecting to a decision by the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology to set up an ombudsman’s office and appoint a senior staff member as ombudsman. MEP Marlene Mizzi has been appointed rapporteur of an EP report concerning the UK's withdrawal from the European Union. The report, for the Internal Market and Consumers Committee (IMCO), is on the legislative proposal complementing EU type-approval legislation with regard to Brexit. This is the first report on the matter to be led by a Maltese MEP.Ms Mizzi said EU legislative framework governing type-approval for a number of products will no longer apply to the United Kingdom as of the withdrawal date. A white moggy called Theo, who pawed and sat on his owner all night to stop her falling asleep after she developed a blood clot, was crowned British Cat of the Year on Thursday.
