Ford Motor Co. is resuming construction on a Michigan electric vehicle battery plant that the company postponed two months ago during a strike by the United Auto Workers union. But the automaker says that due to slowing electric vehicle sales growth, it will scale back the factory's size, cutting the number of planned jobs to 1,700 from 2,500. A man accused of firebombing an anti-abortion office in Wisconsin has agreed to plead guilty to a federal charge of damaging property with explosives. Online court records show Hridindu Roychowdhury entered a signed plea agreement Monday. Prosecutors in exchange have agreed to recommend the judge reduce his sentence because he has accepted responsibility for the crime. As much as 1.1 million gallons of oil may have been discharged into the Gulf of Mexico from a pipeline system off Louisiana’s southeast coast. Federal officials said Tuesday that the pipeline has been shut down, but authorities were still trying to determine the exact location and cause of the discharge. None of the oil has reached land, though its affect on wildlife is still being investigated. A U.S. Fish and Wildlife official says two oily pelicans were sighted off the Louisiana coast Saturday, but still appeared active and able to fly.

Britain’s top court has ruled that riders for one of the country’s biggest meal delivery companies don’t have collective bargaining rights because they aren’t employees. It's a setback for gig economy workers pushing for better pay and working conditions. The Supreme Court’s ruling Tuesday came in a case filed by the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain, which had sought to organize the people who deliver takeout meals for Deliveroo. A three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the dismissal of a lawsuit by Dakota Access Pipeline protesters who alleged excessive force by law enforcement during a clash in 2016. Nine protesters filed the lawsuit alleging civil rights violations in officers' use of tear gas, rubber bullets, shotgun bean bags and water in below-freezing temperatures during the clash in November 2016. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ fund to support homeless families announced $117 million in new grants on Tuesday to organizations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The grants are a part of a $2 billion commitment Bezos made in 2018 to support homeless families and to run free preschools. The Bezos Day 1 Families Fund has now given almost $640 million to support homeless families. Laws enacted in at least 10 states prohibit or restrict students from using pronouns or names that don’t match their sex assigned at birth. The laws are creating fear for transgender and nonbinary students and sowing confusion for teachers over how to comply but still offer a welcoming environment for everyone in their classes. Mental health experts and LGBTQ+ rights advocates say that requiring parental consent or notification of pronouns forcibly outs trans and nonbinary students, who already face a high risk of bullying and abuse. North Korea has told neighboring Japan that it will make a third attempt to launch a military spy satellite in the coming days. Japan’s coast guard said Tuesday North Korea notified Tokyo of its plan to launch the spy satellite sometime between Wednesday and Nov. 30. The North’s notification came a day after rival South Korea warned it to cancel its launch plans or face consequences. U.N. Global shares are trading mixed after a rally on Wall Street that was led by gains in Microsoft after it announced it was hiring Sam Altman, former CEO of OpenAI, the ChatGPT maker. Shares rose in early Tuesday trading in Germany, but fell in France and Britain. In Asia, shares finished lower in Tokyo, while rising in Sydney and Seoul. Chinese markets were initially lifted by reports that regulators have drafted a list of property developers that will be able to tap low-cost financing. The eruption of Papua New Guinea’s tallest volcano is subsiding, but thick ash still billowed into the sky and coated roofs and palm trees nearby. Mount Ulawun on the northeastern island of New Britain is one of the South Pacific nation’s most active volcanoes. The eruption Monday afternoon sent ash more than 9 miles into the sky. Papua New Guinea lowered the volcano's alert level by one level on its four-tier scale. The change means the volcano is having a moderate-to-strong eruption rather than Monday's very strong eruption. Millions of people are expected to hit airports and highways in record numbers over the Thanksgiving holiday. The busiest days to fly will be Tuesday and Wednesday as well as the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen 2.6 million passengers on Tuesday and 2.7 million passengers on Wednesday. Also running is activist and business owner Michael Valentine, giving Salt Lake City residents three left-leaning choices for mayor. Though the position is officially nonpartisan, the city is largely Democratic in a mostly Republican state. A judge in Atlanta is set to hear arguments on a request to revoke the bond of one of former President Donald Trump’s co-defendants in the Georgia case related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis last week filed a motion asking county Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee to revoke the bond of Harrison Floyd. State authorities are investigating after a California Highway Patrol officer shot and killed a man on a Los Angeles area freeway during a struggle over the weekend that was recorded on video. The deadly encounter occurred Sunday afternoon during a struggle with a man who'd been seen walking on Interstate 105. The CHP says the man refused to leave the freeway and that led to a struggle during which the man tried to shock the officer with a stun gun. A Hawaii official says all nine people aboard a U.S. Navy plane that overshot a runway have escaped injury. A U.S. Marine Corps spokesperson said Monday that the P-8A aircraft overshot the runway at a Marine base and went into Kaneohe Bay. Another spokesperson says the Coast Guard responded but that rescue operations were quickly called off.
