Stellantis plans to build a new midsize pickup truck, along with battery-run versions of six Jeep, Ram and Dodge vehicles. Those and other plans by Detroit’s automakers have emerged in details of the tentative contract agreements that ended the six-week strikes by the United Auto Workers union. Chiefs want to be 'world's team' by going global with star power and Super Bowl success

The Kansas City Chiefs say Sunday's game in Frankfurt against the Miami Dolphins is a big step in the organization's plan to become the “world’s team.” The blueprint is simple enough. They have won two of the past four Super Bowls, they have dynamic stars in reigning MVP Mahomes and All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce, and the NFL has prioritized international growth. Taylor Swift just adds to their good timing. Chiefs president Mark Donovan says: “We feel like this is our era.” They hope to play more games abroad. Читать дальше...

Warren Buffett's firm reports $12.8 billion loss as investments fall but its insurers performed well

Warren Buffett's company has reported a $12.8 billion loss as the paper value of its investments fell, but the companies it owns — particularly the insurers — generally performed well. Berkshire Hathaway said Saturday that it lost $12.8 billion, or $8,824 per Class A share, in the quarter. But Berkshire Hathaway didn't actually sell many of its stocks, so Buffett says investors should focus on the operating earnings of the companies it owns that exclude investments. By that measure, Berkshire's operating... Читать дальше...

During strike talks, Biden worked to build ties to the UAW's leader. They have yet to fully pay off

President Joe Biden made a major commitment to cultivate a relationship with the new head of the United Auto Workers before the start of strikes at General Motors, Ford and Stellantis. Biden invited UAW President Shawn Fair for a one-on-one meeting in the Oval Office on July 19. But even as Biden’s sympathies publicly shifted toward union workers in their standoff with automakers, there are few signs that the UAW has fully warmed to the Democratic president. Biden has yet to receive the union’s endorsement... Читать дальше...

Small biz owners are both hopeful and anxious about the holidays, taking a cue from their customers

All signs point to a relatively solid holiday season for America’s small businesses. Yet, owners of these businesses appear to have a collective anxiety about the months ahead. They have their customers to thank on both counts. American kept up their spending over the summer, witness the government’s estimate that the economy grew by 4.9% in the third quarter. Yet even as they open their wallets, consumers seem pessimistic about their finances. In turn, owners fear consumers have run through their... Читать дальше...

War in the Middle East upends the dynamics of 2024 House Democratic primaries

Most members of Congress have stood firmly behind Israel since the Hamas attack, but not Cori Bush. The Missouri Democrat called Israel’s response an “ethnic cleansing campaign,” and was among 10 House members who did not back a resolution supporting Israel. Bush now faces a challenge in next year's Democratic primary. She isn’t alone. The war is complicating the 2024 race for some Democrats. Moderates are being encouraged to run in districts where lawmakers have criticized the Israeli response. Among the potentially vulnerable... Читать дальше...

Russia opens a vast national exposition as presidential election approaches

Russia has unveiled a sprawling exposition highlighting the nation’s accomplisments, which will run through the months leading to the presidential election in which Vladimir Putin is widely expected to seek a new term. Putin issued a decree in March to hold the exposition and some observers have seen it as aimed at creating an ideological framework for his reelection. News reports had suggested he might use the opening to announce his candidacy for the March election, but his spokesman later said he would not attend the event. Читать дальше...

Offshore wind projects face economic storm. Cancellations jeopardize Biden clean energy goals

The cancellation of two large offshore wind projects in New Jersey is the latest in a series of setbacks for the nascent U.S. offshore wind industry, jeopardizing President Joe Biden's goal of powering 10 million homes by towering ocean-based turbines by the end of the decade. The Danish wind energy developer Ørsted said this week it’s scrapping its Ocean Wind I and II projects off southern New Jersey due to problems with supply chains, higher interest rates and a failure to obtain desired tax credits. Blinken tries to cajole wary Arabs on support for post-conflict Gaza as Israel's war intensifies

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is stepping up frantic diplomacy, trying to build support for planning a post-conflict future for Gaza. On his second urgent mission to the Middle East since the Israel-Hamas conflict began, Blinken was meeting Saturday in Amman with senior Jordanian and other Arab officials. The meeting comes a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pointedly snubbed Blinken's blunt warning that Israel risks losing any hope of an eventual peace deal unless it eases the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Trump-DeSantis rivalry grows more personal and crude as the GOP candidates head to Florida

Donald Trump wants not only to beat Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for the Republican nomination, but to embarrass him in their shared home state. Trump recently earned the endorsement of Sen. Rick Scott of Florida and a state lawmaker who has been a longtime ally of DeSantis. More endorsements are expected in the coming days. Trump and DeSantis will be among the GOP hopefuls speaking Saturday at the Florida Freedom Summit. DeSantis is still a powerful governor who enacted policies long sought by conservatives. Right turn on red? With pedestrian deaths rising, US cities are considering bans

Almost every major city in the United States generally allows drivers to turn right at red lights, but that could be changing. A dramatic rise in automobile accidents killing or injuring pedestrians and bicyclists has led to a myriad of policy and infrastructure changes. The debate over whether to ban right on red has sparked the most intense sentiments on both sides. Washington, D.C.'s City Council last year approved a right-on-red ban that takes effect in 2025. Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle have considered it too. Читать дальше...

Israel's fortified underground blood bank processes unprecedented amounts as troops move into Gaza

Hours after Hamas militants attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, the country’s new fortified, subterranean blood bank kicked into action. The Marcus National Blood Services Center in Ramla, near Tel Aviv, had been scheduled to open within days, but the Hamas raids that killed more than 1,400 people changed the timeline. Staff at the center say the bank supplied tens of thousands of units of blood in the days that followed the Hamas raids... Читать дальше...

Bankman-Fried's trial exposed crypto fraud but Congress has not been eager to regulate the industry

The conviction of former cryptocurrency mogul Sam Bankman-Fried for stealing at least $10 billion from customers and investors is the latest black mark for the crypto industry. When cryptocurrencies collapsed and a number of companies failed last year, Congress considered multiple approaches for how to regulate cryptocurrencies. However, most of those efforts have gone nowhere, especially in this chaotic year... Читать дальше...

Maine mass shooter was alive for most of massive 2-day search, autopsy suggests

An autopsy suggests that the mass shooter in Lewiston, Maine, was alive and possibly on the run during a good portion of the huge search.
