The City of Birmingham’s first Black police officer, Leroy Stover, has died. Birmingham Police on Friday posted about Stover’s death on X, formerly known as Twitter. The department said Stover's legacy and work at the Birmingham Police Department paved the way for others to follow in his footsteps. Al.com reports Stover died Thursday at the age of 90. A cause of death has not been disclosed. Stover joined the force in March 1966 and rose to the rank of deputy chief. News outlets report he retired in 1998, with 32 years of service. South Carolina authorities say an Arkansas man has been arrested after he allegedly tried to crash through the exit gates of a South Carolina nuclear plant. The Oconee County sheriff's office says Doyle Wayne Whisenhunt, of Lockesburg, Arkansas, was taken into custody Friday night at an abandoned home in Pickens County, South Carolina. Ken Mattingly, an astronaut who is best remembered for his efforts on the ground that helped bring the damaged Apollo 13 spacecraft safely back to Earth, has died. He was 87. Panama's president has signed into law an indefinite moratorium on new mining concessions. President Laurentino Cortizo signed the law Friday, which also prohibits renewing existing concessions.
