Pope Francis says he will go to Dubai for three days during the COP28 climate conference hosted there. Francis said that during an interview on Italian television network RAI that he would be in Dubai on Dec. 1 through Dec. 3. The interview was broadcast on Wednesday evening and recorded a few hours earlier. Francis gave no details of his itinerary for the trip. A small nonprofit, Summer Science Program, has puzzled for much of the last year over what do to with a surprise bequest of an estimated $200 million. Its board learned in the late summer of 2022 that Franklin Antonio, a co-founder of the large chipmaker Qualcomm, had granted the organization 20% of his estate. The gift is about 100 times the nonprofit's annual budget. The Mexican government says it will pay half of interest rates on bank loans to rebuild the 377 hotels destroyed or heavily damaged by Hurricane Otis. But President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will not provide government loans to the hotels, the backbone of the local economy. López Obrador announced Wednesday a package of $3.4 billion in aid for the resort. Much of that will be spent on payments of $2,000 per damaged home, and free electricity for residents for several months.

A murder trial in Texas is underway in the fatal shooting of pro cyclist Anna Moriah Wilson. Kaitlin Armstrong faces up to 99 years in prison in the May 2022 slaying. Prosecutors told jurors Wednesday that the last thing Wilson did was “scream in terror.” Armstrong has pleaded not guilty. A ferry that had ran aground last month off southeastern Sweden and started leaking oil into the Baltic Sea has been pulled free and anchored nearby. The Swedish Coast Guard said that a new oil leak was discovered after the grounded ship was towed away on Wednesday. Danish energy developer Orsted is scrapping two large offshore wind power projects off the coast of New Jersey, adding uncertainty to a nascent industry the Biden administration is counting on to help transition away from the burning of planet-warming fossil fuels. The company said Tuesday it is scrapping its Ocean Wind I and II projects in southern New Jersey. The company cited supply chain issues as a reason to halt the projects.
