A judge wants to know why two men convicted of secondary roles in a plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer have been transferred to federal prisons out of state. Pete Musico, Paul Bellar and Joe Morrison are entitled to appeal their convictions following a trial on state charges in Jackson County in 2022. A Dutch citizen who recently admitted to killing U.S. student Natalee Holloway in Aruba in 2005 is being sent back from the United States to Peru where he will serve out a sentence for the killing of a Peruvian woman. Interpol agent Hilda Manosalva says that Joran van der Sloot is scheduled to arrive Monday afternoon in the Peruvian capital of Lima. Van der Sloot was temporarily extradited to the U.S. to face charges linked to Holloway’s disappearance, a case that has drawn international attention over the course of two decades.

Health officials are warning that WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches may contain dangerous levels of lead. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says four children in North Carolina had high levels of lead in their blood linked to the products. Company officials have recalled all lots and expiration dates of the product, which is marketed for young children and sold nationwide. Parents and caregivers should not buy or serve the fruit puree. Children who may have eaten them should get tested to check levels of lead in their blood.

U.S. health regulators are warning consumers not to use more than two dozen varieties of over-the-counter eyedrops due to the risk of infections that could lead to blindness. The advisory from the Food and Drug Administration applies to lubricating drops sold by six companies, including CVS Health, Rite Aid and Target. General Motors and the United Auto Workers union have reached a tentative contract agreement that could end a six-week-old strike against Detroit automakers. The deal follows the pattern set with Ford last week and Jeep maker Stellantis over the weekend. Israeli troops and tanks are pushing deeper into Gaza, advancing on two sides of the territory’s main city. Meanwhile, the U.N. and medical staff warned that airstrikes have hit closer to hospitals where tens of thousands of Palestinians have sought shelter alongside thousands of wounded. A man accused of murder, attempted murder and a hate crime in an attack on a Palestinian American woman and her son is scheduled to appear in court following his indictment by an Illinois grand jury. Joseph Czuba, 71, is expected to enter a plea at an arraignment Monday on eight counts in the indictment filed last week. He is charged in the fatal stabbing of Wadea Al-Fayoume, 6, and the wounding of Hanaan Shahin, 32, on Oct. 14. Authorities say the victims were targeted because of their Muslim faith. A flow of recent data from the U.S. government has made one thing strikingly clear: A surge in consumer spending is fueling strong growth, demonstrating a resilience that has confounded economists, Federal Reserve officials and even the sour sentiments that Americans themselves have expressed in opinion polls.
