A man charged with voter fraud in Florida blames rivalry between Trump and DeSantis supporters

A man has been arrested on forgery and fraud charges after authorities say he cast a ballot in Florida for his deceased father in the 2020 election. Robert Rivernider was charged last week with felony forgery of a public record and fraud in connection with casting a vote. Rivernider says he will plead not guilty. He blames the charges on a local political rivalry between himself, an active Trump supporter, and local officials supporting DeSantis, who also is a candidate for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Virginia governor's office says unknown number of eligible voters were wrongly removed from rolls

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration says it is working to fix an error that caused an unknown number of eligible voters to be removed from the rolls. VPM News reported that state election officials are collaborating with Virginia State Police to identify voters whose registration was “canceled in error” and are beginning the process of having those people immediately reinstated. The Richmond news outlet reported Tuesday that the problem appears to stem from recent changes the agency has made to clean voter rolls. Читать дальше...

Rishi Sunak is promising to change Britain. He starts with railway cuts and a crackdown on smoking

U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has told his Conservative Party he's not afraid to make tough decisions for long-term change. Sunak said in a speech to the party conference on Wednesday that the proof lies in his decision to curtail the embattled High Speed 2 railway project that was planned to link London and Manchester. That is causing ripples. So is a proposal to ban smoking for the next generation. Whether the bold moves translate into success for the right-of-center party in an election next year is another question. Читать дальше...

How Disney turned Halloween into a money-making machine

For Disney fans, Halloween is among the most desirable (and expensive) times to visit its theme parks. That’s largely due to the after-hours parties: the Oogie Boogie Bash in California and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party in Florida. Disney Halloween parties are held on select nights starting as early as August and can cost up to about $210 per person. That ticket covers after-hours party admission, so visitors also need a separate ticket to enter the parks earlier in the day. The parties are popular — often selling out within minutes. Point of no return: Pope challenges leaders at UN talks to slow global warming before it's too late

Pope Francis is shaming and challenging world leaders to take concrete action to slow climate change before it’s too late. In an update to his landmark 2015 encycyclical, he's warning that God’s increasingly warming creation is fast reaching a “point of no return.” The document, “Praise God,” was released Wednesday on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the pontiff’s nature-loving namesake. It's aimed at spurring negotiators to commit to binding climate targets at the next round of U.N. talks in Dubai. Читать дальше...

In total, 3.6 million borrowers will have had $127 billion in debt wiped out since Biden took office.

Stock market today: Asian shares are sharply lower, tracking a rates-driven tumble on Wall Street

Asian markets are trading sharply lower after Wall Street tumbled as it focused on the downside of a surprisingly strong job market: the likelihood that interest rates will stay high. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index sank 2.3% and most other markets lost more than 1%. U.S. futures and oil prices edged lower. The S&P 500 lost 1.4% Tuesday. The Dow fell 430 points and wiped out the last of its gains for the year so far. The Nasdaq composite led the market lower with a 1.9% drop as Big Tech stocks were among the market’s biggest losers. Child care programs just lost thousands of federal dollars. Families and providers scramble to cope

After two years of receiving federal subsidies, 220,000 child care programs across the country lost funding. Part of the largest investment in child care in U.S. history, the monthly payments ranged from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars. The funding that ended Saturday was meant to stabilize the industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Providers say ending it puts at risk millions of children and their families. The Century Foundation, a progressive think tank in Washington, D.C., analyzed a provider survey and government data. Читать дальше...

A test case of another kind for the Supreme Court: Who can sue hotels over disability access

The Supreme Court is taking up a case that could make it harder to sue hotels when their websites are not clear enough about their accommodations for people with disabilities. The justices are being asked Wednesday to limit the ability of so-called testers to file lawsuits against hotels that fail to disclose accessibility information on their websites and through other reservation services. For people with disabilities, accurate information is critical to their travel plans. Joseph Stramondo and Leah Smith... Читать дальше...

Things to know about the resignation of a Kansas police chief who led a raid on a small newspaper

Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody's resignation Monday came four days after the mayor suspended him.
