A man has been arrested on forgery and fraud charges after authorities say he cast a ballot in Florida for his deceased father in the 2020 election. Robert Rivernider was charged last week with felony forgery of a public record and fraud in connection with casting a vote. Rivernider says he will plead not guilty. He blames the charges on a local political rivalry between himself, an active Trump supporter, and local officials supporting DeSantis, who also is a candidate for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration says it is working to fix an error that caused an unknown number of eligible voters to be removed from the rolls. VPM News reported that state election officials are collaborating with Virginia State Police to identify voters whose registration was “canceled in error” and are beginning the process of having those people immediately reinstated. Picketing has begun at Kaiser Permanente hospitals as some 75,000 workers who say understaffing is hurting patient care go on strike in five states and the District of Columbia. Wednesday’s labor action kicks off a major health care worker strike. Opening statements are set to begin at the fraud trial of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried in New York City after a jury was chosen in Manhattan federal court. The statements will take place before a lunch break with the first witness to follow after lunch. Prosecutors say Bankman-Fried defrauded thousands of investors and customers in his businesses of billions of dollars by siphoning off their money for his own uses. The man facing a murder charge in the fatal shooting of Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas 27 years ago has made his first appearance before a Nevada judge. Duane “Keffe D” Davis faced a judge Wednesday following his indictment last week. Police and prosecutors say Davis orchestrated the drive-by killing of the hip-hop icon in September 1996 and provided his nephew with the gun to do it. Swedish media say the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences may have announced the winners of this year’s Nobel Prize in chemistry prematurely. Public broadcaster SVT said the academy sent a press release by mistake early Wednesday that contained the names of the winners. The Associated Press did not receive the press release and has decided not to publish the names until they’re confirmed. An academy spokeswoman said the academy had not met yet and no decision had been made.

President Joe Biden is announcing another $9 billion in federal student loan debt forgiveness. The relief will be provided through existing programs, and the details were provided by a White House official who requested anonymity ahead of Wednesday's planned announcement. Biden has been under pressure to fulfill his promises on student debt relief even though his original plan was overturned by the conservative majority on the Supreme Court. In total, 3.6 million borrowers will have had $127 billion in debt wiped out since Biden took office.

Officials say at five people have been wounded, none critically, in a shooting at Morgan State University in Baltimore. The Baltimore Police Department initially said officers were on the scene Tuesday for an “active shooter situation” on the campus of the historically Black college. The gunfire shattered windows at a residential building.
