FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried's trial has taken a star turn. His former fellow top executive and ex-girlfriend Caroline Ellison testified against him on Tuesday in Manhattan federal court. She said Bankman-Fried once told her he thought someday he might be the U.S. president. Ellison blamed Bankman-Fried for crimes she admitted to last December in a cooperation deal. Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were seriously hurt Tuesday after a fire broke out at a training facility north of Los Angeles. Sheriff’s department spokesperson Nicole Nishida says few details were immediately available. A KTLA helicopter over the scene showed firefighters spraying water into the smoking rear of a parked semi-trailer. Highly pathogenic bird flu has made its first appearances in U.S. commercial poultry flocks this season, affecting one turkey farm in South Dakota and one in Utah. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that avian influenza, which is deadly to commercial poultry, was confirmed in a flock of 47,300 turkeys in Jerauld County of South Dakota on Oct. 4 and at a farm with 141,800 birds in Utah's Sanpete County last Friday. Texas is moving ahead with preparations to execute a condemned inmate in the hopes that the U.S. Supreme Court will lift a lower court’s stay and allow the lethal injection to proceed. Forty-year-year-old Jedidiah Murphy had been scheduled to die Tuesday for the October 2000 killing of 80-year-old Bertie Lee Cunningham during a carjacking. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a bill that makes it easier for authorities to compel treatment for people with mental illness or addiction issues. The proposal is partly aimed at addressing the state’s growing homelessness crisis. Under current state law, local government can’t force a person to take treatment if they refuse to receive help. PepsiCo’s revenue rose 7% in the third quarter despite lower demand as the company continued to hike prices. Pepsi raised prices 11% in the July-September period, the seventh straight quarter that the company has implemented double-digit price hikes. Sales volumes fell 2.5%. The company reported Tuesday that quarterly revenue was $23.4 billion. That was in line with Wall Street’s expectations. Net income for Pepsi, based in Purchase, New York, rose 14% to $3.1 billion, or $2.24 per share, which is better than expected.

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who has been detained in Russia on espionage charges, has lost an appeal to be released from jail, meaning he will stay behind bars at least until Nov. 30. Gershkovich was arrested in the city of Yekaterinburg while on a reporting trip in late March. The 31-year-old U.S. citizen and his employer deny the allegations, and the U.S. government declared him to be wrongfully detained. Auto workers have launched strikes at three General Motors facilities in Canada. Their union, Unifor, represents about 4,300 workers at the plants. They had warned they would walk off the job if they failed to reach agreement with GM by midnight local time Monday. Officials say a car rammed into the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco, coming to a stop in the lobby and creating a chaotic scene that ended with police shooting the driver, who later died at the hospital. Police descended on the consulate building after 3 p.m. on Monday on a report of a vehicle crashing into the building and officials urged people to avoid the area. Police Sgt.
