The New York attorney general’s office has sent a cease-and-desist letter to a group accused of confronting voters at their homes while claiming to be state election officials and falsely accusing people of committing voter fraud. The Thursday letter orders the group NY Citizens Audit to immediately stop any voter intimidation and turn over records on training of and communications with its door-to-door canvassers. Sales of previously occupied U.S. homes fell for the third month in a row in August, as higher mortgage rates, rising prices and a dearth of properties on the market shut out many would-be homebuyers. Existing home sales fell 0.7% last month from July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.04 million, the National Association of Realtors said Thursday. Sales slumped 15.3% compared with the same month last year. The national median sales price rose 3.9% from August last year to $407,100.

Wall Street is slumping again as stock prices fell worldwide on expectations that U.S. interest rates will stay high well into next year. The S&P 500 was down 0.8% early Thursday. That follows a 0.9% drop a day earlier after the Federal Reserve indicated it may cut interest rates next year by only half of what it had earlier been predicting. Sweden’s central bank has raised its key interest rate, saying the “inflationary pressures in the Swedish economy are still too high.” However, there were signs that the inflation had begun to fall. The Riksbank raised its policy rate Thursday by a quarter of a percentage point to 4% and says it could be raised further. Three South African navy personnel have died and a senior officer is in critical condition after seven crew members of a submarine were swept off its deck and out to sea by big waves. The Department of Defence says it happened as an Air Force helicopter was attempting a “vertical transfer” of supplies down to the SAS Manthatisi off the coast of Cape Town on Wednesday. The mother of a 6-year-old who shot his teacher in Virginia could be jailed for failing mandatory drug tests. A bail revocation hearing is scheduled Thursday afternoon for Deja Taylor in federal court in Newport News. Taylor's son used her gun during a shooting in January that seriously wounded teacher Abby Zwerner. Taylor pleaded guilty in June to using marijuana while possessing a gun, which is illegal under federal law. Martin are among 17 authors suing OpenAI for “systematic theft on a mass scale.” Their suit was filed Tuesday in New York and is the latest in a wave of legal action by writers concerned that AI programs are using their copyrighted works without permission. Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi says that relations with the United States can move forward if the Biden administration demonstrates it wants to return to the 2015 nuclear deal, and a first step should be easing sanctions.
