Florida jury pool could give Trump an advantage in classified documents case

The classified documents prosecution of Donald Trump would seem, on paper at least, to be the most straightforward of the four criminal cases the former president is facing. But that doesn’t make the path to conviction easy, particularly with the case set for trial in a Florida courthouse expected to draw its jury pool from a conservative-leaning region of the state that supported Trump in the 2020 election. Those built-in demographics may be a challenge for prosecutors despite the apparent strength of evidence at their disposal... Читать дальше...

California regulators orders Arrowhead bottled water to stop drawing from some mountain springs

California regulators have ordered Arrowhead bottled water to stop using some natural springs in the state. The company BlueTriton owns the Arrowhead bottled water brand. The brand traces its roots to the Arrowhead Springs Hotel that began selling bottled water from its basement in 1906. But environmental and community groups say the company has never had legal permission to take water from the springs. The State Water Resources Control Board on Tuesday ordered BlueTriton to stop using some of the springs in the San Bernardino Mountains. Читать дальше...

Sacramento prosecutor sues California’s capital city over failure to clean up homeless encampments

A Sacramento prosecutor is suing California’s capital city over failure to clean up homeless encampments. Sacramento District Attorney Thien Ho says his office asked the city to enforce laws around sidewalk obstruction and to create additional professionally operated camping sites. He announced the suit Tuesday during a news conference in Sacramento. The prosecutor had threatened in August to file charges against city officials if they didn’t implement changes within 30 days. At the time, Sacramento... Читать дальше...

Colombian leader summons intense oratory for a bleak warning: that humanity is making itself extinct

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has delivered an ominous prophecy with grandiose language. He paints a grim picture of what lies ahead if nations fail to swiftly redesign life on this planet. Speaking at the U.N. General Assembly, he said that the migration of climate refugees shows that what he called “the crisis of Life” has already begun, and also that mankind has “dedicated itself to war,” which has distracted attention and resources from development goals and climate change. Eloquent oratory is a skill Petro often deploys. Читать дальше...

In their new book “Astor,” CNN Journalist Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe trace the storied Astor family's legacy from its inception, when John Jacob Astor emigrated from Germany and established himself in the beaver fur trade, a bloody and highly competitive business. The book traces how subsequent generations either built upon or frittered away the family's initial fortune. Cooper and Howe wrote the book as a follow-up to “Vanderbilt,” a chronicle of Cooper’s own famous family that came out in 2021. Читать дальше...

For filmmakers, ‘Oppenheimer’s’ $900M-plus haul is an important moment for Hollywood and theaters

Hopes were always high for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” The studio knew the film was great, and commercial, but no one in the industry expected that a long, talky, R-rated drama would earn over $900 million. As of Monday, “Oppenheimer’s” was nearing $913 million, making it Nolan’s third highest grossing film, trailing only the “Dark Knight” sequels. It's also the third biggest movie of the year behind “Barbie” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and the most successful biopic ever. It’s a staggering... Читать дальше...

Norfolk Southern announces details of plan to pay for lost home values because of Ohio derailment

Norfolk Southern announced new details Monday about its plan to compensate East Palestine residents for lost home values since the fiery derailment disrupted life in the eastern Ohio town in February. The railroad's program will no doubt be welcomed by some people who want to sell their homes and move away rather than deal with the lingering health worries.
