Stocks closed lower in Wall Street’s first trading after a five-week rally carried it to its highest level since the spring of last year. The S&P 500 fell 0.5% Tuesday. The Dow lost 245 points, or 0.7%, and the Nasdaq composite gave back 0.2%. The U.S. stock market took a step back after rising on hopes the economy can avoid a recession and inflation is easing enough for the Federal Reserve to stop raising interest rates soon. Critics say the Fed may have to keep rates higher for longer, which would pressure the economy.

Police in Milwaukee have arrested a second person in a shooting in which six people, including the two alleged shooters, were wounded right after a Juneteenth celebration wrapped up. Police say in a news release that the two defendants, males ages 17 and 19, were arrested after Monday’s shooting outside the Greater Philadelphia Church of God in Christ. Lebanese officials say auto tycoon Carlos Ghosn has filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Nissan and about a dozen individuals in Beirut over his imprisonment in Japan and what he says is misinformation spread against him. Milwaukee police and fire officials say at least six teenagers were shot Monday afternoon around where the city's Juneteenth celebration had just wrapped up. The shooting happened about 4:20 p.m. outside Greater Philadelphia Church of God in Christ. Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said the victims, four girls and two boys, ranged in age from 14-19. A new report from a Nepal-based research organization finds that water security for nearly 2 billion people living downstream from the Hindu Kush Himalayan ranges will likely be threatened by the end of this century if global warming is not controlled.
