The next round of COVID-19 vaccines will target one of the latest versions of the coronavirus. The Food and Drug Administration's decision was announced Friday, one day after a panel of outside advisers supported the recipe change. Federal investigators say pilots of a cargo plane got confused over which engine was failing, causing the plane to go into the ocean off Hawaii in 2021. Both pilots survived. The National Transportation Safety Board says captain’s high workload and poor communication and teamwork between the two pilots contributed to the accident. The 46-year-old plane was owned by Rhoades Aviation plane and operated as a TransAir cargo flight from Honolulu to Kahului, Hawaii, when it crashed in the predawn hours of July 2, 2021.

Shortly before setting out for Beijing, Secretary of State Antony Blinken is emphasizing the importance of the U.S. and China establishing better lines of communication. He will be the highest-ranking member of the Biden administration to visit China. Blinken says the U.S. wants to make sure “that the competition we have with China doesn’t veer into conflict” through lack of contacts between top leaders. Organizers of the blackout, which began on Monday, say Reddit’s changes threaten to end key ways of historically customizing the platform — which relies heavily on the work of volunteer moderators. Michael Jordan is finalizing a deal to sell the majority share of the Charlotte Hornets, a move that will end his 13-year run overseeing the organization, the team announced Friday. Jordan is selling to a group led by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall, the Hornets said. Plotkin has been a minority stakeholder in the Hornets since 2019. Schnall has been a minority owner of the Atlanta Hawks since 2015 and is in the process of selling his investment in that team.

Cleanup efforts continued Friday after severe storms — including some that produced tornadoes — tore across a swath of Southern states, killing at least five people as they destroyed hundreds of homes, tossed vehicles into buildings and left hundreds of thousands without electricity. A bid by Iowa Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds to reinstate the state’s strict ban on most abortions has failed. In a rare 3-3 split decision Friday, the state's supreme court upheld a 2019 district court ruling that blocked the law. The outcome distinguishes Iowa from more than a dozen states across the country that severely limit access to abortion, at least for now. The ruling doesn’t preclude Reynolds and lawmakers from passing a new law restricting abortion, however. Currently, abortions are allowed in Iowa up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.

New research suggests testosterone replacement therapy is safe for men with “low T” and who have cardiovascular disease or are at high risk for it. But doctors say men shouldn’t view the treatment as a way to stay young. The United States has deployed a nuclear-powered submarine capable of carrying about 150 Tomahawk missiles to South Korea. The USS Michigan’s arrival Friday was the first of its kind in six years. Authorities say a large mass of rock slid down a mountainside above a Swiss village that was evacuated last month, stopping just short of the settlement. Brienz was evacuated on May 12 after geology experts warned that Alpine rock looming over the village could break loose. Republican senators have ended the longest walkout in the history of the Oregon Legislature, which held up key bills for six weeks. Republicans showed up for work Thursday after compromising with Democrats on abortion and gun safety measures. Democrats say the abortion bill will still ensure abortion access. U.S. officials say the Department of Energy is among a small number of federal agencies compromised in a Russian cyber-extortion gang’s global hack of a file-transfer program popular with corporations and governments. They say the impact is not expected to be great.
