FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A California man convicted of shooting and wounding a police officer during a 2016 traffic stop has been sentenced to 41 years to life in prison. Ruben Carreles was found guilty in May of several charges including attempted murder. The Fresno Bee reports the 31-year-old was sentenced on Friday. Prosecutors say Carreles opened the door of a car and started running as Porterville police pulled over a vehicle in which he was a passenger. HYATTSVILLE, Md. (AP) — A previously suspended Prince George's County police captain was charged with assault in an unrelated case. The Washington Post reports Capt. Thomas Hart was charged with one count of felony assault and one count of misdemeanor assault in connection with a dispute involving someone Hart knows. Hart had been charged in April with theft and forgery. Police say he was accused of forging a signature on a withdrawal check he shares with his ex-wife. He was suspended without pay in April. DOVER, Del. (AP) — Delaware's unemployment rate dropped below 4 percent last month for the first time in a decade. The Delaware Department of Labor released data on Friday that shows the state's unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent in June. That's the lowest it's been since February 2008. Officials said Saturday that the Ferguson fire is churning northward, sending up smoke that has been obscuring valley views in the park. BRIDGEWATER, Conn. (AP) — Police say they have discovered a dead body in a Connecticut river. The body was found early Saturday morning in a section of the Housatonic River passing through Bridgewater. It was found in the water at the Lake Lillinonah boat launch at Main Street South around 6:45 a.m., and sent to the state's medical examiner for assessment. The cause of death is unknown. Officials say no criminal activity is suspected to have led to the death.

HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) — A skateboarder has been killed in a Massachusetts crash. Police say a 27-year-old man was hit by a truck while skateboarding in Haverhill on Saturday around 3:40 a.m. A driver from Salisbury was driving a 2016 Freightliner truck when it hit the skateboarder, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the man has not been released pending notification of his family. No charges or citations have been issued. The crash is under investigation by Haverhill Police Department and Massachusetts State Police.
