HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut high school has cancelled classes early after a teenager set fires in two bathrooms. Hartford police say garbage and paper were burned in two different bathrooms at Hartford Public High School on Thursday. The fires were quickly extinguished but fire officials recommended an early dismissal to clear the smoke. No one was injured and police say they've identified the culprit through surveillance video. They say a teenage boy has been placed into custody but has not yet been charged.

PODGORICA, Montenegro (AP) — The European Union foreign policy chief on Thursday hailed efforts by nations in Western Balkans to advance toward membership in the bloc, ending a tour of the volatile region where Russia is also vying for influence. Federica Mogherini spoke in Serbian capital Belgrade, the last stop of her trip that also included Albania, Macedonia and Montenegro. CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire Senate has again passed a bill that would ban therapy that attempts to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of minors. The bill approved Thursday is identical to one the Senate passed last year, but the House killed in January. The House later passed a slightly different version, and those differences would have to be reconciled in order for the bill to advance to the governor. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities are reviewing an altercation between a deputy and a suspect at the courthouse in Oregon City last summer to determine if excessive force was used. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports the incident was detailed by Joel Manley, a now-retired Clackamas County sheriff's deputy who recently notified the county of his plans to sue for harassment and retaliation. PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — The Washington State Patrol is investigating after a Washington State University student says she was sexually assaulted by a law enforcement officer in March. The Spokesman Review reports that two police sergeants are under investigation. One works for university police. The other works for Pullman Police. The student filed a complaint with WSU April 6. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A handful of South Carolina lawmakers want to tour a maximum-security state prison where a riot killed seven inmates. In a letter obtained Thursday by The Associated Press, five Democratic lawmakers tell Gov. Henry McMaster and Corrections Director Bryan Stirling that they want to see conditions inside Lee Correctional Institution firsthand. SAN ANTONIO — The Spurs will be without head coach Gregg Popovich, whose wife, Erin, died Wednesday, for Game 3 of the first round Thursday night against the Warriors. San Antonio assistant coach Ettore Messina will fill in as head coach in Popovich’s absence. After battling an undisclosed illness for an extended period, Erin Popovich died early Wednesday. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators say a 16-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder after his teenage friend was found stabbed to death. The Sheriff's Department says the 17-year-old victim's body was found Wednesday afternoon in a riverbed area in South El Monte. Investigators say the victim's father assembled a group of the teen's friends to search for him after he didn't show up for school on Wednesday. SANTA ROSA, Ariz. (AP) — The Border Patrol says a Mexican national who entered the country illegally was arrested after he was spotted using two horses to smuggle drugs. The Border Patrol says agents located and arrested the man near the village of Santa Rosa on the Tohono O'odham Reservation after a Tohono O'odham police officer spotted him and the horses Wednesday. MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A judge is now open to considering a request to dismiss felony charges — including attempted aggravated murder — against a Vermont teen accused of planning to shoot up his former high school. The judge said Wednesday he was vacating his earlier dismissal of the defense's request to throw out the charges against 18-year-old Jack Sawyer. DENVER (AP) — Students at high schools across the country are expected to walk out of classes Friday, the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shooting, in their latest push for gun control. But they won't be protesting at the Colorado school where the violence took place. Classes at Columbine will be canceled just as they have been every April 20 since the 1999 massacre.
