The Department of the Interior said Thursday that a lease sale involving more than 300,000 acres is set for Aug. 29. Plans for the sale come as wind energy projects are already taking shape in the northeast. Earlier this month, the government gave the go-ahead for New Jersey’s first offshore wind farm to begin construction. That followed approval... Читать дальше...

Las Vegas police took laptops, documents from home searched in Tupac Shakur's 1996 killing

A home searched by Las Vegas police investigating the drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur in 1996 is tied to the uncle of a long-dead suspect in the killing. Public records show it's the residence of the wife of Duane “Keffe D” Davis. He has said he was in the front seat and his nephew was in the back, where the fatal shots were fired from. He wrote in his memoir that he told authorities what he knew many years ago in exchange for ending a federal conspiracy case against him and his gang. A source... Читать дальше...

American Airlines rides travel boom to $1.3 billion profit in the second quarter as fuel prices drop

American Airlines reported a $1.3 billion profit for the second quarter, continuing the run of strong results from the nation's airlines. The results Thursday beat Wall Street expectations. American and other airlines are getting a boost from strong ticket sales as travel recovers from the pandemic. And they are being helped by a huge drop in the cost of jet fuel. American is also raising its forecast of earnings for the full year. But the airline faces much higher labor costs. CEO Robert Isom says... Читать дальше...

Solar panels on water canals seem like a no-brainer. So why aren't they widespread?

The idea of putting solar panels on top of the world's thousands of miles of irrigation canals has long seemed like a good one. In arid locations, besides the clean electricity, there is the added benefit of reducing evaporation. But the technology has been slow to take off. Pilot projects in India were never broadened. A study measuring the potential of covering canals in California has given the idea new legs. Now a startup company is trying to learn from India's challenges and will install panels on canals in California's Central Valley. Читать дальше...

Homes become 'air fryers' in Phoenix heat, people sacrifice on AC for fear of cost

Temperatures have peaked at or above 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 degrees Celsius) the entire month of July in Phoenix and extreme heat stretches across the American South. Experts say that the lack of cloud cover and high temperatures turn homes into “air fryers." Air conditioning can be a matter of survival. But the resource that is essential for living safely through the extreme heat can come with high electricity bills. Some people say they are rationing air conditioning to avoid bills they can't... Cambodia's leader returns to Facebook weeks after an acrimonious breakup with the platform

US says North Korea has not responded to attempts to discuss American soldier who ran across border

U.S. officials says that North Korea hasn’t responded to their attempts to discuss the American soldier who bolted across the heavily armed border. That underscores that the serviceman’s prospects for a quick release are unclear at a time of high tensions and inactive communication channels. Pvt. Travis King was supposed to be on his way to Fort Bliss, Texas, this week after finishing a prison sentence in South Korea for assault. Instead, he ran into North Korea while on a civilian tour of the border village of Panmunjom on Tuesday. Читать дальше...

Senate Judiciary panel to consider ethics rules for Supreme Court

The Senate Judiciary Committee will vote Thursday on a new ethics code for the Supreme Court, an attempt to respond to recent revelations about justices’ interactions with wealthy donors and others. The committee’s legislation would impose new ethics rules on the court and a process to enforce them, including new standards for transparency around recusals, gifts and potential conflicts of interest. Alabama's first execution since they were paused last November may proceed on Thursday, court says
