A former state corrections officer has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his role in the beating death of a prison inmate in May 2018. Cash-short banks have borrowed about $300 billion in emergency funding from the Federal Reserve in the past week, the Fed announced. Nearly half the money — $143 billion — went to holding companies for the two major banks that failed over the past week, Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, triggering widespread alarm in financial markets. An additional $148 billion in lending was provided through a longstanding program called the “discount window,” and amounted to a record level for that program.

The Pentagon has released footage of what it says is a Russian aircraft conducting an unsafe intercept of a U.S. Air Force surveillance drone in international airspace over the Black Sea. Texas officials have announced a takeover of Houston’s nearly 200,000-student school district. The decision Wednesday follows allegations of misconduct by school trustees and chronically low academic scores at one of the nearly 50 high schools in the nation’s eighth-largest district.
