A federal appeals court has cleared the way for the highly-contested construction in Nevada of what will be the largest lithium mine planned in the U.S. The court is allowing construction while it considers whether the government illegally approved the mine in a rush to produce raw materials for electric vehicle batteries. The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by oil and gas companies hoping to move a key lawsuit over damage to Louisiana coastal wetlands from state to federal courts. The high court rejected the appeal in a brief order dated Monday. In effect, it upheld an October appeals court decision that keeps the lawsuit by Plaquemines Parish against oil giants including Chevron, ConocoPhillips and Exxon Mobile in state court. The National Weather Service predicts that a powerful weather system will affect most of the lower 48 states into Thursday. It could bring heavy snow to the Southwest and some portions of the high Plains and record high temperatures in the Gulf Coast into the Ohio Valley. Norway’s energy minister has canceled a trip to Britain because of a protest against a wind farm they say hinders the rights of the Sami Indigenous people to raise reindeer in Arctic Norway as activists continued to block entrances to Norwegian ministries. The family of the late Kobe Bryant has agreed to settle legal issues surrounding photos of the body of the NBA star and others who were killed in a 2020 helicopter crash. Attorneys say Los Angeles County agreed to pay Bryant's widow, Vanessa Bryant, and their daughters $13.5 million on top of the $15 million that jurors awarded her at a trial in August. The U.S. Postal Service is buying 9,250 Ford Motor Co. electric vans and 14,000 charging stations as part of a move to switch its fleet to electric vehicles. The service also is buying another 9,250 internal combustion vehicles from Fiat Chrysler in North America, now part of Amsterdam-based Stellantis. The Fiat Chrysler and Ford vans together will cost just over $1 billion. Jack Holder, a Pearl Harbor survivor who went on become a decorated World War II flyer, has died in Arizona. He was 101. Darlene Tryon, a friend and executor of Holder’s estate, said he died Friday at a hospital near Phoenix. Born to a farming family in Texas, Holder joined the Navy in 1940 at age 18. He was on duty at Pearl Harbor when Japanese aircraft bombed the U.S. naval base on Dec. 7, 1941. Holder recalled diving into a ditch to avoid gunfire. A felon faces two charges after federal agents say he tried to board a plane with three guns, ammunition and a fake U.S. marshal's badge. The incident came to light this week but occurred in December. An FBI agent says Seretse Clouden planned to fly from Newark, New Jersey, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
