COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The University of South Carolina is acknowledging the role slaves played in building and running the school in its early years. The university unveiled two plaques on Tuesday. One acknowledges the work of slaves whether they were owned by faculty members, the school or private masters who were paid for their slaves' services. VENTURA, Ventura County — Ferocious Santa Ana winds blew flames across 48,000 acres in Ventura County overnight, leveling at least 150 structures by Tuesday morning and forcing 27,000 people to flee as the out-of-control wildfire raged into their neighborhoods. The fire, which broke out at around 6:30 p.m. Monday, is a frightening replay of the October Wine Country infernos which also began at night and, driven by strong winds, blasted through North Bay communities, including Santa Rosa.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Police say two people from Missouri were taken into custody after suspicious devices prompted the closure of a section of Interstate 70 in downtown Topeka for about five hours. Police Lt. Chris Heaven says officers noticed the suspicious packages, methamphetamine and guns after the vehicle was stopped for several traffic violations early Tuesday. A third fire erupted in Southern California just before 10 a.m. Tuesday, about 30 miles from Los Angeles, shutting down Interstate 5 in both directions. The fire broke out in the Rye Canyon Loop in Santa Clarita, and had grown to 500 acres by noon Tuesday. The Rye fire came on the heels of two other wildfires raging in the region: the 48,000-acre Thomas Fire in Ventura County and the 11,000-acre Creek Fire near Sylmar and Lakeview Terrace close to the Los Angeles city limits. MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian military says its strategic bombers have flown to Indonesia, a visit that showcases Russia's military power. The Russian Defense Ministry said two Tu-95 strategic bombers landed on Biak Island on Tuesday. They were accompanied by two heavy-lift Il-76 transports that carried support crew and supplies. WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) — Police say a man has been charged with murder in the death of a 16-year-old girl found shot in a vehicle that had crashed in Connecticut. Waterbury officers responded to the crash into a utility pole around 10 p.m. Monday. The girl, identified as Evelyse Santiago, was declared dead at the scene. Police say 27-year-old Dominique Pittman had been in the car when it crashed. They allege Pittman fatally shot Santiago before it happened. Police say Pittman and Santiago had been in a relationship.
