LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan's minimum wage will rise to $9.25 an hour starting Jan. 1. That's a 35-cent raise from the current minimum of $8.90 per hour. It's the final definitive increase provided by a 2014 law, the state said Friday. Beginning in 2019, however, the minimum wage is due to increase annually with inflation unless the unemployment rate is high. Employers can pay 85 percent of the minimum to employees age 16 and 17. SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A former employee of a Massachusetts city charged with exchanging child pornography with a New Hampshire man and plotting to meet an 8-year-old girl for sexual activity has been denied release as he awaits trial. The Salem News reports that a judge ruled this week that 39-year-old David Holland would be a danger to children if released. The former recycling coordinator for Salem was arrested in September. (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union sued the Nebraska's prison system Friday, accusing it of violating state public records laws by refusing to identify its suppliers of lethal injection drugs. MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) — A Colorado man has been charged in the cold-case killing of his estranged wife in Iowa, where they used to live and where she was last seen 17 years ago. Michael Lee Syperda, 52, was taken into custody without incident Thursday near Glenwood Springs, Colorado, which is about 130 miles west of Denver, according to the Iowa Public Safety Department. UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United Nations has launched a record appeal for $22.5 billion to help some 136 million people across the world in need of humanitarian aid as a result of conflicts, natural disasters, epidemics and displacement. U.N. humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock says the number of needy is about 5 percent higher than the projection at this time last year — and the 2018 appeal is up from the $22.2 billion appeal for 2017.
