BEIRUT (AP) — A program that had been giving free basic Internet services to over three million Egyptians was shut down on Wednesday, social media site Facebook said. Facebook and other social media sites are extremely popular in Egypt, and were used to organize protests during the 2011 uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

The 6-foot flightless bird was first spotted last weekend wandering the Aguanga area south of Hemet, but an animal services officer was unable to track it down. Animal Services spokesman John Welsh says the big birds native to Australia are known for running very fast.

Crisp and cold temperatures with a slight chance of sprinkles were in store for the Bay Area leading into a dry New Year’s Eve, but forecasters expected a line of storms to hit the region for the first week of 2016. (AP) — Authorities say a man and a woman were hospitalized following a stabbing in San Jose and the attacker remains at large. KNTV reports (http://bit.ly/1mRax0e ) Wednesday that the stabbing happened Tuesday night in front of a Carl's Jr. restaurant in San Jose. Police say it appears the victims were attacked by several men who got away in a car.

3 youths from Muncie high school charged with alleged hazing (AP) — Prosecutors in Muncie say they've charged three juveniles in connection with hazing at Delta High School. Delaware County Prosecutor Jeffrey Arnold calls the case an "attempt at hazing that was way out of control" and involved more than ten victims.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say an Ohio man took cellphone video of himself drinking while driving and posted it on Facebook, leading to his arrest hours later. The Franklin County sheriff's office says someone tipped off deputies about the video after it was posted Monday, and the vehicle was stopped that afternoon south of Columbus, in Hamilton Township.

NEW YORK (AP) — The medical examiner has ruled a homicide the death of a man shot and paralyzed in a nightclub melee 35 years ago. The medical examiner said the cause of death was sepsis with bronchopneumonia — a complication of the shooting.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq has again demanded that Turkish troops withdraw from a northern camp where they are training anti-Islamic State fighters, warning that it will consider military action if the soldiers remain. On Monday, Iraqi forces backed by U.S.-led airstrikes drove IS militants out of the city center of Ramadi, the capital of the western Anbar province, and raised the Iraqi flag over the main government complex there.

A police report, citing intelligence information, said the militants were planning to carry out bombings in downtown Jolo town and attack police and military detachments on New Year's Eve.

The funding from the state Legislature also included $450,000 for UH-Hilo to replace its broken Hoku Kea teaching telescope. Gov. David Ige had called for a quarter of telescopes on the summit to be removed to make way for the controversial Thirty Meter Telescope. The other two telescopes earmarked for decommissioning are the UKIRT, formerly known as the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope, and the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory, which stopped operations in 2014.

(AP) — The Army has received 12 claims for over $300,000 in damages attributed to a wayward blimp that broke loose in Maryland and came to rest in the Pennsylvania countryside in October. The slow-moving, unmanned Army surveillance blimp broke loose from its mooring at Aberdeen Proving Ground and then floated over Pennsylvania for hours on Oct. 28, causing electrical outages as its tether hit power lines.

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Police say a Lynchburg man died after he was hit by a Norfolk Southern freight train. Lynchburg police told media outlets that 37-year-old Michael Glenn Rawlins was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred Tuesday night. An investigation is underway. Police say foul play isn't suspected.

(AP) — A Massachusetts health insurer is apologizing after sending automated phone calls to as many as 10,000 senior citizens in the wee hours of the morning. Tufts Health Plan accidentally sent the robocall reminding patients to get their flu shots between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Oldham County Chief Deputy Brent Warden tells the Amarillo Globe-News (http://bit.ly/1NQAExa ) that the fire Tuesday at the Royal Inn Motel in the community of Wildorado started in a corner unit and spread, destroying a significant portion of the L-shaped motel. The fire's cause is undetermined, though Potter County Fire Chief Fire Chief Richard Lake said it might have been an electrical issue.

ROME (AP) — Italian authorities say Apple Italia has agreed to pay 318 million euros ($350 million) in taxes for several past years and is working out a deal to cover future tax liabilities for business it does in the country. The case is one of several against global technology companies that use headquarters in low-tax nations like Ireland to avoid paying higher taxes in other countries, like Italy.

Two central Illinois residents have drowned in floodwaters, raising the state's death toll since the weekend to seven. Police used cellphone location services to find them, but their minivan is still missing.

WAKEFIELD, N.H. (AP) — Police in New Hampshire say four on-duty Secret Service agents have been involved in a head-on collision that killed the driver of the other car. Police said early Wednesday that the agents were passengers in a Ford Taurus heading south on Route 16.
