A man suffered a broken nose, fractured skull and a traumatic brain injury after he was knocked out following an altercation with a group of men in San Francisco’s Financial District Tuesday night, authorities said. Police responded to reports of the assault around 9 p.m. on the 400 block of Pacific Avenue near Sansome Street, said Officer Albie Esparza, a police spokesman. SEATTLE (AP) — Washington is one of 12 states where too few students are taking required statewide exams, meaning it could face sanctions next year if schools do not increase testing, federal education officials said. The participation rate was about 91 percent in Washington state after many high school juniors refused to take the exams. Preliminary data showed more than three-quarters of juniors in the Bainbridge Island, Issaquah, Enumclaw and Snoqualmie Valley school districts refused to take the tests.

St. Cloud Police officials said they aren't releasing the names of the mother or daughter since a person in their household is in law enforcement, and Florida law permits the withholding of identities under such circumstances. "At this time, the incident appears to be an accidental shooting," the news release said. The State Attorney's Office will review the shooting to decide if charges should be filed after the St. Cloud Police Department has completed its investigation.

VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) — A pregnant New Jersey woman managed to deliver her child in the cab of a pickup truck as her husband drove to the hospital. Portia was born 4 pounds, 12 ounces, and a medical team rushed out to cut the umbilical cord when the family arrived at the hospital.
