WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama to travel to Charleston Friday to memorialize church shooting victims.

TALLINN, Estonia — The U.S. committed Monday to contribute weapons, aircraft and forces, including commandos, as needed for NATO’s new rapid reaction force, to help Europe defend against potential Russian aggression from the east and the Islamic State and other violent extremists from the south. Selection of jurors began Monday in federal court in Davenport in a lawsuit filed by anti-abortion activist Teresa Manning, who contends that the University of Iowa College of Law refused to hire her for teaching jobs because of her beliefs and associations. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cooler weather Monday was expected to aid crews making progress against a huge forest fire in a remote area of the San Bernardino Mountains — the largest of several blazes burning across California. The fire about 90 miles east of Los Angeles was 21 percent contained and holding steady at about 27 square miles as firefighters attacked the flames with a fleet of water-dropping aircraft. (AP) — A crew of university research students saved the life of a distressed boater in the Gulf of Mexico near Egmont Key. According to the University of South Florida, the crew and students aboard the Florida Institute of Oceanography's Weatherbird II vessel on Saturday night heard an urgency call from the U.S. Coast Guard explaining that three men were in the water, separated from their boat about two miles away from the Weatherbird's location.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A mother is suing a charter school principal and the Anchorage School District because she claims her daughter suffered physical and emotional abuse brought on by teachers in the fall of 2012. The mother, identified in the lawsuit only as "Michelle M.," also alleges that the Alaska Native Cultural Charter School principal, Patsy Shaha, forced her 9-year-old daughter to sit in a hallway with packing tape covering her mouth.
