A California judge is rejecting an environmental group’s lawsuit that sought to block the state's largest utility from seeking to extend the operating life of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. Friends of the Earth sued in state Superior Court in April, hoping to derail a proposal to extend the federal licenses of the twin-domed plant for at least five years. General Motors says it will close a large computer center near Phoenix at the end of October, eliminating 940 jobs. The information technology center in Chandler, Arizona, opened in 2014 as part of a blitz by GM to attract software designers and other employees in metro areas with high numbers of technical workers. A longtime friend of convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh has pleaded guilty to helping the disgraced attorney steal millions of dollars of insurance settlements from the sons of Murdaugh’s dead housekeeper. Iran and Saudi Arabia are among six nations that have been invited to join the BRICS bloc of developing economies, along with the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Egypt and Ethiopia. Fast fashion retailers Shein and Forever 21 are going into business together. Under a partnership agreement announced Thursday, the Chinese-founded Shein will acquire about one-third interest in Sparc Group, Forever 21’s operator. Most deals struck by athletes under name, image and likeness guidance from schools or states are in exchange for something — an athlete endorsement on social media, for example, or an appearance at an event. It is now possible to pay athletes money while receiving something far less tangible: a digital non-fungible token, or NFT.

Uber has raised the minimum age requirement for most new drivers in California to 25. The company says the change is necessary because of the rising costs of commercial auto insurance in the state. It takes effect Thursday. The new age limit applies only to drivers signing up to transport passengers with Uber’s ride-hailing platform, and not for those delivering food with Uber Eats. Previously drivers as young as 19 could sign up. Drivers under 25 years old who activated their accounts prior to Wednesday can continue to drive for Uber.

A Vermont theater company is hoping to get back into its playhouse next summer after it flooded this July. The Weston Theater Company moved its performances to higher ground after storms flooded the playhouse, but eventually decided to cut its season short due to the devastation. Russian state news agency Tass says the arrest of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was detained on espionage charges, has been extended to Nov. 30. Authorities say three people were killed and five others were wounded in a shooting at a Southern California biker bar. The gunman was also killed by deputies. The shooting occurred after 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cook’s Corner in rural Trabuco Canyon in Orange County, a popular longtime watering hole for motorcycle riders and enthusiasts who gather for live music and other events.
