The largest union at Navy shipbuilder Bath Iron Works, located in Maine, has approved a three-year contract, averting another strike like the one three years ago. Machinists Union Local S6 approved the pact with 76% of members backing the deal in online voting that began on Friday and concluded Sunday afternoon. A union spokesperson said the contract negotiations went “smoothly” overall — a far cry from three years ago when the union went on strike for 63 days. Another rapid-fire gun device that is worrying federal government officials is being put to the test in lawsuits in New York City and Texas. The forced-reset trigger introduced by Rare Breed Triggers in late 2020 has been deemed an illegal machine gun by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Georgia Republican lawmakers passed a law to make it easier to challenge school library books as inappropriate, but few people are using it. The Associated Press finds at least 15 large Georgia school districts say they have received no demands to remove books under the law, which took effect Jan. 1. Russia reported an “abnormal situation” Saturday on its moon-bound Luna-25 spacecraft, which launched earlier this month. The country’s space agency, Roscosmos, said the spacecraft ran into trouble while trying to enter a pre-landing orbit. Racing to land against an Indian craft, the spacecraft is scheduled to land on the south pole of the moon on Monday, which scientists believe may contain frozen water that could be transformed by future explorers into air and rocket fuel. Howard Hubbard, a retired Catholic bishop who acknowledged covering up allegations of sexual abuse in his upstate New York diocese and recently married a woman in a civil ceremony, has died after suffering from a massive stroke. Federal investigators say a mistake made by a hot air balloon pilot caused a deadly crash in June 2021 in New Mexico. The National Transportation Safety Board says the pilot was likely impaired by the cocaine and marijuana found in his system and failed to maintain clearance while trying to land in Albuquerque.
