Hibs 3 Floriana 1 Late goals from Jurgen Degabriele and Gilmar enabled Hibernians to overcome ten-man Floriana 3-1 at the National Stadium. Floriana created the first chance after only two minutes when they were awarded a central free-kick and Andrea Scozzese’s curling was blocked by Justin Haber, the Hibs goalkeeper. Updated - Boy, 5, injured by lioness at Montekristo - Government promises action

A five-year-old boy suffered injuries this afternoon when he was attacked by a lioness at Montekristo park. The park was open today for a hunting fair. The boy was taken to hospital by his parents.  He is suffering back and neck injuries which the police described as slight. The owners of the park refused to comment. In November, a three-year-old boy was seriously injured by a tiger that was taken out for a “walk” by its handlers in the same 'zoo'.  The owners had subsequently said that the unlicensed animal park was being closed down. At least 35 were injured and two killed when an Amtrak passenger train collided with a backhoe in Chester, Pennsylvania.   The derailment came just weeks after 36 people were injured when an Amtrak passenger train derailed in Kansas in March.

The CEO of the Unscheduled Bus Service, Ray Bartolo, has passed away aged 55. The GRTU expressed its condolences, saying that Mr Bartolo left a positive contribution towards bringing together coach owners and operators. "A familiar name in the transport industry, Mr Bartolo has been very active on GRTU’s Transport Lobby Group bringing his years of experience and genuine way of dealing with policy in practice to the table. Mr Bartolo will be sorely missed by all that have in one way or other dealt with him over the years," the GRTU said.

Man threatened to assault former girlfriend, court told

A 43-year-old man with “anger management problems” was remanded into custody and taken to Mount Carmel Hospital today after he allegedly threatened to assault his ex-girlfriend. Sunny Degabriele, from Qormi, was charged with violent and threatening behaviour and with damaging his former partner Vincenza Bonnici’s property when he broke down her front door on Saturday night. Migrant admits having let friend use his passport

A 31-year-old migrant was found guilty today of handing out his passport to another migrant. Abdela Haruna, from the Ivory Coast, was given a six-month suspended sentence by Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera after admitting to letting his friend use his temporary Maltese passport to purchase an airline ticket to Italy. Mr Haruna told the court he had not physically given his passport to the third party, but had told him where to find it. “I got a phone call from my friend and he was begging me and crying, so I gave it to him,” he said. Jasim Khadijah, an Islamic State member believed to be responsible for a deadly attack by militants on U.S. troops in northern Iraq, has been killed in a drone strike, a spokesman of the anti-IS coalition said in Baghdad. Junior Lyceum and common entrance examinations should be re-introduced as mixed ability classes are putting students of “high academic understanding” at a disadvantage, a report is recommending. Brussels Airport reopens to thin stream of passengers

Brussels Airport reopened to a thin stream of passengers today, 12 days after suicide bombers destroyed its departure hall and killed 16 people. Belgium's main airport had not handled passenger flights since two suspected Islamist militants carried out the suicide attacks. Those bombs and a separate one on a metro train in the capital killed 32 people, excluding the three bombers. Plane hits car on California highway, at least one dead

A small plane has crashed into a car on a highway in California, killing at least one person, a woman in the back seat of the vehicle. Five others, including the pilot and his passenger, were injured. Witnesses at the scene were quick to help.  The car had stopped on the side of Interstate-15 when the plane landed on its belly, skidded along the lane and slammed into it. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.

People can soon pay for a chance to experience death, cremation and rebirth at a Shanghai attraction.  A business in Shanghai that's opening on Monday is hoping to give people that experience. Participants discuss a life-or-death scenario and are then asked to either sacrifice themselves or the life of another and explain why. The person with the worst explanation then dies. Five Britons admit drug possession

Five young Britons were taken to court and fined for drug possession this morning. Four were fined  €500 each for being in possession of  ecstasy. The fifth was fined €650 for being in possession of ecstasy and  cocaine. The accused were Craig Lee Britton, 22, Joshua Elliot Hill, 23, Alec Lawson, 21, Ryan James Fisken, 20 and Reece William McAneny, 20. All pleaded guilty. Man 65, accused of sexual abuse on girl, 8

A 65-year-old man from Zabbar has been remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to having being involved in sexual acts with an eight year old girl and having used or threatened violence against her. Grazio Azzopardi was arraigned this morning and accused of having committed the crimes on and before October 6 last year when he was her tutor. He was also accused of distributing porn. The court issued a treatment order for psychological evaluation of the accused.

A recently concluded detailed survey on Mater Dei Hospital found that the problem of poor concrete extended beyond the Casualty Department to other sections of the hospital.
