U.S. health officials: Zika 'scarier than we thought'

The spread and impact of the Zika virus is wider than initially anticipated and the first vaccine candidate for the virus should be available in September, U.S. health officials said today. Dr Anne Schuchat, a deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters the type of mosquito in which the virus is carried is present in more U.S. states than initially thought. Espionage charges filed against U.S. Naval officer

A U.S. Navy officer is in custody at a military prison under charges of espionage, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. The officer is being held at the Navy Consolidated Brig in Chesapeake, Virginia, Earnest said. He declined to comment on the "substance of the allegations" and referred reporters' questions about allegations of the officer passing sensitive U.S. intelligence and state secrets to other countries to the Department of the Navy. Edward Snowden: 'Protests in Malta are huge'

Edward Snowden, the American computer professional who leaked classified information from the American National Security Agency (NSA) in 2013 has commented on the anti-corruption protest held by the PN yesterday, saying it was 'huge'. Mr Snowden retweeted pictures first tweeted by Nationalist MEP Roberta Metsola. Mr Snoweden has been variously described as a whistleblower and a traitor for leaking the American secrets, particularly about government surveillance programs. He fled to Russia where he has avoided US efforts to prosecute him.

Two 13-year-old girls are among 123 school girlmothers under the age of 18 who have been assisted by Servizz Għożża since 2014, after becoming pregnant. Servizz Għożża is provided by the Educational Services Directorate. Female warden punched in Sliema

A man is under arrest for having punched a female warden in Sliema this morning. He is expected to be arraigned in court tomorrow. The incident happened in Cathedral Street at about 12.45pm. The warden had been diverting traffic because of the temporary closure of the street while children left school. She asked the driver of a car parked at the corner to drive on, but he allegedly refused before he assaulted the warden. Knights' coin found during Castille Square works

A coin from the time of Grand Master Alof De Wignacourt was among discoveries made during the repaving of Castille Square, Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi said in parliament this evening. Replying to a question by Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis, he said the works revealed part of the old surface of St Paul’s Street, a coin from the time of Alof De Wignacourt (Grand Master between 1601 and 1622) and pottery also from the time of the Order of St John in Malta. No confidence motion: Government insists debate should be restricted to Friday, Opposition disagrees

Government and opposition this afternoon disagreed in the House Business Committee over when the no confidence motion presented in the wake of the Panama Papers should be debated. Government whip Godfrey Farrugia said the debate should be held on Friday, lasting all day if necessary. But Deputy Opposition leader Mario de Marco said the Opposition was against restricting the debate to one sitting. France seeks G20 tax haven blacklist, EU sanctions on evaders

France will seek tougher EU sanctions on people who help to facilitate tax evasion and a G20 blacklist of uncooperative tax havens, the Finance Ministry said today following the Panama Papers leaks. Countries on the blacklist should be subject to "counter-measures coordinated by different states", the ministry said in a statement outlining the issues that Finance Minister Michel Sapin will push at meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the Group of 20 leading economies this week in Washington. Two in court after football brawl

Two football supporters ended up in court this afternoon charged with slightly injuring a police officer after a heated argument erupted yesterday at the Sirens football pitch in St Paul's Bay. Matthew Borg, 35 from Siggiewi and Jonathan Urry, 27 from Paola, stand charged with slightly injuring sergeant Anthony Buttigieg, disobeying police orders, breaching public peace and exhibiting abusive behaviour. Senegalese man admits using somebody else's passport to leave Malta

A 21-year-old man from Senegal has been handed a suspended sentence after admitting to trying to use a passport belonging to another person to travel from Malta to Italy. Bayla Bah was apprehended at the airport after officials realized that the valid passport he had tried to pass as his own in fact belonged to someone else. Dubai's top religious authorities say that stealing WiFi from your neighbour would not be proper Islamic conduct. That is according to a religious edict - known as a fatwa - from Dubai's Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department. Bail for three accused of hold-ups

Three young men who stand charged with carrying out a string of armed robberies from convenience stores and a lotto booth between January and March have been granted bail. Kane Grima, 20, Perrie Daniel Amarni Sciberras, 27, and Josef Galea, 19, had already had their request for bail turned down twice: once upon their arraignment and the second time two weeks ago. Libyan acquitted of taking drugs into prison - court does not believe other prisoners' account

A Libyan national has been acquitted of smuggling cannabis resin into prison and trafficking it after a court ruled that it could not believe the version of events given by two other inmates who had know each other. The case dates to February 2009 when Diaeddin Arab, 49, was charged with possessing and trafficking cannabis resin, smuggling it into prison and being a repeat offender The court observed that following a decision by the first court, the accused had fled to Libya in April 2009 but returned out of his own will in September 2015. Court upholds PN request to halt removal of billboards

A court has temporarily upheld a request by the Nationalist Party to stop Transport Malta and the Planning Authority from removing its roadside billboards. The PN requested the warrant of prohibitory injunction as it protests over a legal notice issued on April 3 which limits political billboards to three months before an election. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat this morning had a meeting with his Jordanian counterpart Abdullah Ensour with whom he discussed bilateral relations. This is the first time that a Maltese Prime Minister is visiting Jordan. Dr Muscat said he wanted to continue to give a sign that cooperation in the Mediterranean region was of utmost importance. First major traffic disturbance in Kappara expected next month

The first major traffic disturbance from the Kappara junction, works on which started this morning, are expected in May. Transport Malta said drivers would be encouraged to take alternative routes as of May as new culverts would be dug around the Kappara roundabout for electrical cables supplying Mater Dei Hospital and Sliema.
