ANSON, Texas (AP) — A convicted sex offender found guilty of killing a female corrections officer in Texas has been sentenced to death. A Jones County jury on Tuesday ordered the death penalty for 24-year-old Dillion Compton. Compton was convicted of capital murder Oct. 15 in the July 2016 slaying of guard Mari Johnson, whose beaten body was found in a storage unit at the Robertson prison in Abilene. The Advocate reports the secretary of state's office said in a Twitter message that "budgetary constraints" prevented the office from providing the stickers for Tuesday's voting. MEDINA, N.D. (AP) — Sheriff's deputies in southeastern North Dakota came to the aid of a duck hunter from Pennsylvania whose canoe had capsized in a slough south of Medina. A group of hunters called Stutsman County authorities late Monday morning. Three deputies wearing flotation suits swam out about 100 yards and rescued the 30-year-old man. The Bangor Daily News reports low-stress stockmanship will be the focus of the first live demonstration at the event. State livestock specialist Colt Knight says yelling or swinging sticks at the animals creates stress, which can lower their meat quality.
