MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel will announce Monday whether he plans to seek a recount in his race against Democrat Josh Kaul. The Wisconsin Elections Commission announced Friday that based on canvassed vote totals Kaul got 17,190 more votes than Schimel. That is within the 1 percentage point margin that would allow for a recount, but Schimel would have to pay for it. The Associated Press did not call the race last week because it was too close. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — New vote totals show Democratic state Sen. Ricardo Lara has defeated Republican-turned-independent Steve Poizner to become the state's next insurance commissioner. Vote counts updated since Election Day made Lara the winner Friday with nearly 4.9 million votes, or 51.6 percent. Lara will be California's first openly gay statewide officeholder. Poizner would have been the first independent. Lara will head the Department of Insurance, which enforces insurance laws, licenses and regulates companies and investigates fraud.

ATLANTA (AP) — More than 3,000 rape kits found untested in police evidence lockers have all undergone lab tests by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation less than three years after state legislature passed a law to eliminate the backlog, the GBI's director and the lawmaker who spearheaded the measure announced Friday. DNA tests on the rape kits — some of which languished for 15 years — have produced evidence linking 321 cases to suspects in other crimes and have identified two serial rapists, said state Rep. The Causeway Classic is heading to Nevada. UC Davis announced Friday morning that its annual rivalry game against Sacramento State will be played at the University of Nevada in Reno on Saturday. The game was moved because of “uncertainty regarding air quality in Davis,” according to a news release on the school’s athletic website. Kickoff is set for noon at Mackay Stadium in Reno. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has rejected the latest appeal of a man serving life in prison for the 1995 killing of an Omaha police officer. Kevin Allen appealed after a lower court rejected his motion for post-conviction relief without an evidentiary hearing. In the motion, Allen argued, among other things, that former crime scene investigator David Kofoed (KO'-fode) — who was convicted of planting blood evidence in another case in 2006 — might have also tampered with evidence in his case. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Duke Energy says some of its Indiana power customers might not have service restored until Sunday evening following outages cause by an ice storm. Duke released estimated restoration times Friday showing customers in Clarksville, Corydon and Madison might not have power until 6 p.m. Sunday. It says customers in Connersville and Seymour might not have power restored until late Saturday. Duke's web site showed more than 16,000 customers statewide without power as of mid-afternoon Friday. MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — A man considered a suspect in connection with spray-painted swastikas found at a New Hampshire park gazebo and on a car has turned himself in to police. Manchester police had issued a warrant for 19-year-old Jamal Gray, of Manchester. They said Gray turned himself in to police headquarters on Friday afternoon. It wasn't immediately known if he had a lawyer. Police said the swastikas were found late last month. There also were other reports of graffiti spray-painted on a door and other vehicles. BOSTON (AP) — The Jewish Heritage Center at the New England Historic Genealogical Society has been named in honor of longtime supporter. The Boston center will now be known as the Wyner Family Jewish Heritage Center in honor of Justin Lawrence "Jerry" Wyner and his wife Genevieve Geller Wyner. Justin Wyner has been a board member and president of the American Jewish Historical Society. The Wyners in the fall made the lead gift to launch a new multimillion-dollar initiative to build the center's endowment.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — An annual one-day homeless aid event hosted by public agencies, faith organizations and advocacy groups is being held this year at a new location in Las Vegas. The free event called Project Homeless Connect has in the past put about 3,000 homeless and at-risk people together with some 600 volunteers at Cashman Center near downtown. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Preliminary projections Friday show nearly two-thirds of California registered voters cast ballots in last week's election, a recent record for a non-presidential general election. County officials estimate that about 12.8 million ballots were cast by the record 19.7 million Californians who registered to vote. That puts turnout at nearly 65 percent.
