RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina has confirmed the state's first flu-related death as flu season picks up. The News & Observer in Raleigh reported Thursday that the illness claimed the life of an adult in the central part of the state. Health officials did not name the person or offer other identifying details to protect the person's privacy. They said the person died this week. CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Police say there have been 107 fewer homicides and more than 500 fewer shooting victims in the first 10 months of the year compared to the same period last year. October's total of homicides — 47 compared to 58 last October — brings to 471 the total number of homicides for the year and means 2018 will almost certainly end with fewer homicides than 2017 when there were 650. MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Mason City woman has been accused of filing false health insurance claims for her family. Cerro Gordo County court records say 34-year-old Amber Griffin is charged with four counts of insurance fraud-presenting false information and one of theft. The records don't list the name of an attorney who could comment for her. Criminal complaints say Griffin submitted two fraudulent claims in October 2016 and one each in November and December that year. LONDON (AP) — A Japan Airlines co-pilot arrested after failing a breath test shortly before a London to Tokyo flight pleaded guilty Thursday to being almost 10 times over the legal limit for alcohol. London's Metropolitan Police force said Katsutoshi Jitsukawa appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court in west London and admitted exceeding the alcohol limit. The Bangor Daily News reports the Northern Bay Residential Living Center in Penobscot will go up for auction on Nov. 20. Tranzon Auction Properties is handling the sale. The center was closed in 2016 following an investigation that found a list of issues. Inspectors cited an alleged sexual assault at the nursing home that happened in 2014.
