TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a New Jersey man has admitted serving as an administrator for multiple chat rooms where child pornography was shared and discussed on an instant messaging application. David Nelson pleaded guilty Wednesday to distributing child porn. He faces between five and 20 years in prison when he's sentenced Nov. 19. The 44-year-old Toms River man was arrested in April after an FBI investigation found he had sent at least 26 images of child porn to another Kik user during a three-day span last October. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by a group of Michigan parents who alleged that the state didn't obtain proper consent to draw or store their newborns' blood for medical research. An attorney for the parents tells WOOD-TV an appeal is planned. The lawsuit argued that Michigan's decades-old practice of drawing infant blood was unconstitutional. SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man convicted in the brutal beating of his ex-girlfriend is heading to prison. The Republican reports that 37-year-old Jose Alvelo was sentenced Wednesday to a maximum of nine years in state prison in connection with the February 2017 assault that left the victim with broken ribs and a collapsed lung. WALLINGFORD, Conn. (AP) — Police in Connecticut say a woman walking on an interstate highway has been struck and killed by a vehicle. Police say 56-year-old Sharon Ryan was struck while walking toward the Interstate 91 median in Wallingford at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Record-Journal reports the Meriden woman was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where she died from her injuries. The crash is under investigation. No charges have been announced.

Warner Bros.’ “Crazy Rich Asians” has taken off at the box office, opening Wednesday on 3,303 screens and earning $5 million. That total includes preview screenings that were held on 350 screens last week, many of which were reportedly sold out. The film is expected to post a five-day opening of $27 million, with some analysts telling TheWrap that the final figure could be pushed over $30 million. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran is speaking at Kansas State University about global security on the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Moran's appearance is part of the Landon Lecture series. The series is named for former Kansas Gov. Alf Landon, who was the 1936 Republican nominee for president. MIDFIELD, Ala. (AP) — Police say a woman who was being beaten and robbed at an Alabama shopping center was rescued by passersby who pulled the attacker out of her car and held him until authorities arrived. Midfield police and witnesses tell news outlets the 74-year-old woman was punched by a man Wednesday morning after she finished grocery shopping at a Piggly Wiggly. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Federal prosecutors say they've made arrests in connection with vandalism that left anti-Semitic graffiti spray-painted at a suburban Indianapolis synagogue. U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler's office says he'll announce the arrests during a Thursday news conference in Indianapolis.
