PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia's Temple University is honoring a 45-year relationship sparked in a campus elevator. Sharyn Rubin and Eric Schlesinger briefly met on move-in day on Sept. 6, 1972, while she was moving in and he was operating a dorm building elevator. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Rubin formally introduced herself a few days later at a college mixer, walking up to Schlesinger and saying, "Hi, Mr. Elevator Man." CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Riot police have blocked hundreds of doctors and nurses from marching to Venezuela's presidential palace to protest low pay and shortages of medical supplies amid the nation's deepening crisis. Thursday's demonstration in Caracas was the first attempt by protesters to reach the presidential palace since massive anti-government protests last year. ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — When her camper began filling with water from the pre-dawn flash flooding inundating a Finger Lakes campground where she was staying, Rene Halligan had just enough time to call 911 and then her daughter and boyfriend, telling them she didn't think she'd survive. But she did, despite being trapped inside her camper and then being swept away by a torrent of debris-filled water that deposited her into Seneca Lake, where she clung to various items floating in the water for two-plus hours before being rescued.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — More farm loan applications are being rejected in rural parts of 10 Plains and Western states in reaction to weak farm commodity prices and income. The latest Rural Mainstreet survey says nearly one-third of bank CEOs reported rejecting a higher percentage of farm loans, while nearly 55 percent indicated their banks had raised collateral requirements in the face of weak farm prices and income. JACKSON, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a California Highway Patrol officer in Northern California was arrested on suspicion of raping a 12-year-old girl. The Amador County Sheriff's Office says 35-year-old Michael Joslin, of Pioneer, was arrested Monday after a pastor contacted authorities after learning of the abuse. Police swarmed a Connecticut park near Yale University and searched people's homes for drugs Thursday in an effort to prevent more overdoses from a batch of synthetic marijuana blamed hospitalizing more than 70 people.
