MONROE, Mich. (AP) — A man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of a 9-month-old baby in southeastern Michigan. The Monroe News reports 32-year-old Justin C. Davis was given his punishment Thursday after earlier entering the plea. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Springfield officials say a woman has died after a fire at home. The fire department says the woman suffered extensive burns during a fire at the home Wednesday afternoon. She died on Thursday. Officials have not released the woman's name or the possible cause of the fire. This is Springfield's first fire fatality this year.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A political argument on Facebook led to a 44-year-old Florida man driving to the home of a stranger he'd been arguing with and shooting him. Now Brian Sebring faces felony charges of aggravated battery and carrying a concealed gun. Sebring tells the Tampa Bay Times he "just snapped and let primal rage take over" on Monday. Sebring says he was responding to a felon who wanted to share his political opinions even though he'd lost the right to vote. HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama school system has named its interim superintendent to the position permanently while it's also dealing with financial struggles. News outlets report the Huntsville City Schools Board of Education voted Thursday night to appoint Christie Finley as superintendent. The board also heard presentations from Deputy Superintendent of Finance Bob Hagood and an auditor about an October 2017 $5 million accounting error that could mean it won't have its required reserve of one month's operating expenses by September 2019.

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. (AP) — A bear cub is recovering after receiving fish skin bandages to its paws that were burned in the California wildfires. A contractor found the yearling female lying in ash and unable to walk on Aug. 2. The bear was taken to the California Fish and Wildlife's lab in Rancho Cordova, where video shows sterilized tilapia skins were placed on its injured paws. Citing a Myrtle Beach report, news outlets report 47-year-old Adel Nassr Mansour was charged with third-degree assault and battery Wednesday. CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago has a new strategy to return lost animals to their owners more quickly and keep them out of the city's animal shelter. Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Thursday that the city's animal control officers will now carry mobile microchip scanners. They'll be able to scan lost pets that have been implanted with microchips to determine the owner's address.
