(AP) — Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says he's open to an expanded investigation into how former workers at the now-defunct Government Accountability Board handled secret John Doe investigations involving Gov. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. John Bel Edwards set a Jan. 19 deadline to reach a tax deal with House Republican leaders to close a $1 billion budget gap. If no deal is reached, the Democratic governor says he won't call a February special legislative session. Lawmakers would then have to craft a budget that strips the entire amount through cuts or let it linger unfinished until a June special session. The Norman Transcript reports that a judge on Wednesday followed a jury recommendation in sentencing 47-year-old Melissa Dawn Clark. Clark was convicted of first-degree murder in October for the 2016 death of 4-month-old Braelyn Zachary. (AP) — A report by a state workplace safety agency shows employees of a chimpanzee sanctuary in central Oregon were harmed by the animals by way of "amputations, choking, grabbing and biting." (AP) — Lawyers for a Tennessee woman serving a life sentence for killing a man who solicited her for prostitution when she was 16 have petitioned the state parole board to commute her sentence. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Scientists in Wisconsin have tracked the state's smallest bat by using an ultra-light transmitter that beamed its movement after emerging from hibernation. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that biologists and volunteers followed a female eastern pipistrelle from a Pierce County cave in May to a roosting spot along the Mississippi River.
