BERLIN (AP) — The European Union's top court has ruled that the bloc's divorce regulations don't cover private agreements, throwing a case back to a Munich court to decide whether to recognize a divorce granted under religious Sharia law to a Syrian-German couple. LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Another round of state of Michigan grant funding will be available for communities and organizations working on the Iron Belle Trail. The state Department of Natural Resources says the primary focus will be on trail segments that will be ready for construction in 2018. Also emphasized will be project engineering and design, as well as sign purchases. Grant proposals of up to $30,000 are due Jan. 5. Winners will be announced in March. BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union's chief Brexit negotiator says that Britain should have less than two years as a transition period after it leaves the European Union and that the U.K. would have to live by all the key EU principles. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Police and sheriff's departments across Illinois are stepping up patrols to try to reduce alcohol- and drug-related crashes this holiday season. The Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police say the stepped up enforcement started this week and will continue through Jan. 2. COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont police are searching for a suspect who they say robbed a convenience store twice. WPTZ-TV reports the first robbery at a Cumberland Farms in Colchester happened early Saturday. Police say a man threatened a clerk with a knife before fleeing with cash. Investigators say Monday a man robbed the same store using a knife. Police say no one was hurt during the robberies. Police have released surveillance images of each robbery. Colchester Police Detective Sergeant James Roy says the Cumberland Farms store is very busy.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City officials plan to debut a hit-and-run alert system in the new year. WABC-TV reports the new system will take effect in March. According to officials, the program will function like an Amber Alert. Police say information will be sent to phones across the city in crashes that involve serious or fatal injuries. According to the City Council, 4,000 people are critically injured in hit-and-run crashes annually. Authorities say they are currently working on logistical issues with the new system. EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. (AP) — A car dealership in suburban Albany is accepting bitcoin purchases. Michael Severance, of Michael's Auto Plaza, tells WHAM-TV the dealership recently started accepting the digital currency. Severance says he became interested in bitcoin as its value rose. The East Greenbush businessman says he wanted his dealership to take advantage of an opportunity. Bitcoin is the world's most popular virtual currency. PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Officials say the operator of a special-needs school bus in Providence has been disciplined and retrained after the vehicle's mechanical lift got stuck, stranding several students on board. A spokesman for the bus company, First Student, tells the Providence Journal the problem was caused by "operator error." Randy Lutz says his 11-year-old son, who has cerebral palsy, was stuck on the bus for more than an hour Monday, sitting exposed to the cold air before Lutz arrived and lifted him off the bus. KIRKLAND, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a Kirkland police officer fatally shot a man reportedly armed with an assault rifle at the Emerson Apartments. The Seattle Times reports that officers responded Tuesday afternoon to investigate a report of a disturbance. Kirkland Police Lt. BEAUFORT, N.C. (AP) — The former director of a North Carolina animal shelter who was accused of embezzling more than $110,000 from the organization has been sentenced to five to seven years in prison. The Daily News of Jacksonville reports the Carteret County Sheriff's office said in a release that Candace Christopherson was sentenced Dec. 13 as part of a plea agreement. The Nation's Weather for Wednesday, December 20, 2017 _____ NATIONAL SUMMARY Following mild conditions the last few days, cool air will reach into the Northeast again today. Generally dry conditions are expected, although snow showers are possible downwind of the Great Lakes. At the same time, a storm system will shift from western Tennessee and northern Mississippi into the Carolinas.
