SEATTLE (AP) — The Mariners have made yet another trade, acquiring right-hander Shae Simmons and outfielder Mallex Smith from the Atlanta Braves for left-handed pitching prospects Luiz Gohara and Thomas Burrows. Smith, 23, made his major league debut last year, appearing in 72 games and hitting .238 with 22 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.

Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto pulled off his eleventh trade of the 2016-17 offseason on Wednesday, and he might not be done yet. Dipoto shipped off prized pitching prospect Luiz Gohara to the Atlanta Braves along with 2016 fourth-round pick Thomas Burrows in exchange for right-handed reliever Shae Simmons and outfielder Mallex Smith. Right-hander Cody Martin was designated for assignment to make room for Simmons and Smith on Seattle's 40-man roster, but Smith might not be there for long.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Grammy winner Richard Carpenter sued Universal Music Group on Wednesday for millions in royalties he contends are owed from licensing Carpenters songs for online services such as Apple's iTunes. The suit, which also names Universal subsidiary A&M Records, is one of a number of lawsuits filed after a 2010 appellate court ruled in a case involving Eminem's record label that music downloads from services such as iTunes should result in higher payments to artists.

LONDON (AP) — The governor of the Bank of England says Britain's exit from the European Union is no longer the single biggest risk to financial stability in the U.K. Carney said it would be in the interests of both Britain and the EU to have a transitional phase for the financial services sector when Britain starts the formal talks to leave the bloc.

Former President Jimmy Carter, who has been working for years to eradicate Guinea worm disease, says there were only 25 human cases of the illness reported worldwide in 2016. The former president said that when The Carter Center joined the battle to eliminate Guinea worm disease in the mid-1980s, there were about 3.5 million cases in 21 countries.

No cases of the Zika strain responsible for the outbreak in Brazil and elsewhere have been reported on the African mainland, though the World Health Organization in May said the strain had infected people in Cape Verde, an island nation off Africa's western coast. The emergence of that strain in Africa would be a major cause for concern because of the poor public health infrastructure in many of its countries, including Angola.

Drugmakers dropped in late morning trading Wednesday after President-elect Donald Trump called for efforts to reduce the government's spending on drugs. The Nasdaq Biotechnology index dropped 2.7 percent in midday trading following Trump's comments at a news conference. Stocks are getting off to a mixed start on Wall Street as investors look ahead to the start of corporate earnings reports later this week. Health care and utilities stocks are higher in early trading Wednesday, but banks and phone companies fell.
