Kuwait’s ruling emir has died at age 86. State television reported Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah's death on Saturday. Kuwait TV broke into programming with Quranic verses just before making the announcement. Sheikh Nawaf was rushed to a hospital in late November for an unclear illness. The United Nations peacekeeping chief says he was very satisfied with the strong support of many countries for its far-flung operations at a recent ministerial meeting, despite “headwinds and challenges and problems.” Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the undersecretary-general for peace operations, said in an interview with AP that the bi-annual ministerial meeting in Ghana earlier this month was attended by nearly 100 countries. Brazil’s lower house has approved a major reform of the nation’s notoriously complicated tax system. It was a major victory for leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva who threw his weight behind the proposal. The long-awaited tax reform aims to simplify the system which is widely considered overly burdensome for both individuals and businesses. It also hopes to boost economic growth that has drifted between downturns and doldrums for the last decade. Lula celebrated the proposal’s approval late Friday and thanked Congress.

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ latest bankruptcy plan would pay Sandy Hook families a minimum total of $55 million over 10 years. That's a fraction of the $1.5 billion awarded to the relatives in lawsuits against Jones for calling the 2012 Newtown school shooting a hoax. The families, meanwhile, have filed their own proposal seeking to liquidate nearly all of Jones’ assets, including his media company Free Speech Systems, and give the proceeds to them and other creditors. A federal judge has denied a request to halt the reintroduction of gray wolves in Colorado just days away from the predators’ release. Judge Regina Rodriguez sided Friday with state and federal agencies against representatives of Colorado’s cattle industry, who sued federal and state agencies over reintroducing the apex predators. A Tesla driver will pay more than $23,000 in restitution for the deaths of two people during a 2019 car crash in a Los Angeles suburb. The restitution was announced Wednesday, on the same day that the automaker recalled nearly all vehicles sold in the U.S. The driver’s case is believed to be the first time in the U.S. prosecutors brought felony charges against a motorist who was using a partially automated driving system.
