U.S. health regulators have approved a first-of-a-kind drug for a rare form of Lou Gehrig’s disease. The Food and Drug Administration approved Biogen's infused drug for patients with a rare genetic mutation that affects less than 500 people in the U.S. The drug is the first intended to treat an inherited form of ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which destroys nerve cells needed for basic functions. The federal government will “not hesitate to crack down” on harmful business practices involving artificial intelligence, the head of the Federal Trade Commission warned Tuesday in a message partly directed at the developers of widely-used AI tools such as ChatGPT. First Republic Bank’s stock is plunging before the opening bell after it said depositors withdrew more than $100 billion during last month’s crisis, with fears swirling that it could be the third bank to fail after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. Johnson & Johnson’s Kenvue consumer health business is preparing for an initial public offering of more than 151 million shares of its stock. The health care giant said late Monday that the per-share IPO price for Kenvue Inc. should range between $20 and $23. J&J said Kenvue has launched a road show for its IPO. Swiss bank UBS says it took in $28 billion in new money from wealthy clients in the first three months of the year. The Zurich-based bank said Tuesday that $7 billion of that came in the 10 days after the announcement it was taking over ailing rival Credit Suisse. Nevada's Department of Corrections has agreed to pay $1.6 million to the family of a handcuffed inmate who was shot and killed in 2014 by a prison guard trainee armed with a shotgun. A Nevada Democratic U.S. senator wants Congress to step in to ensure mining companies can use established mineral claims to dump waste on neighboring federal lands.
