The family of a man who opened fire at a Louisville bank is working to destroy the AR-15 rifle he used to kill five of his co-workers. A state law in Kentucky sends firearms confiscated by law enforcement to auction. The family of the man identified in the shooting, Connor Sturgeon, says they were shocked to hear the gun could end up back in circulation. In a statement released Thursday, the family says they are working “vigorously” to see that the rifle is destroyed. They said federal agents took possession of the rifle on Monday.

An old NASA satellite that studied the sun has plunged back to Earth. The space agency said Thursday the spacecraft reentered the atmosphere over the Sahara Desert. Officials say they've received no reports of damage or injury from the return, which occurred in early morning in Sudan. Experts expected most of the 660-pound satellite, called Rhessi, to burn up. F. Murray Abraham is apologizing after allegations of sexual misconduct led to his departure from the Apple TV+ show “Mythic Quest.” He says it was never his intention to offend anyone and said he had grown in his “understanding from this experience.” The apology comes after a report by Rolling Stone magazine that alleged Abraham was fired from the series following two allegations of misconduct. Tesla shares fell sharply Thursday as the company felt the sting of numerous price cuts it made across its model line up this year in hopes of energizing sales. American consumers pulled back spending on big ticket items during Tesla’s most recent quarter, an anxious economic period in which inflation remained elevated and a pair of U.S. banks that collapsed. A fourth man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a weekend shooting at a Sweet 16 party that killed four young people in Alabama. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency announced the arrest Thursday of 20-year-old Johnny Letron Brown of Tuskegee. Brown is charged with four counts of reckless murder, the same as three other defendants arrested earlier in the case. North Dakota’s Republican Gov. Doug Burgum has signed a veto-proof bill into law that restricts transgender health care and criminalizes providers who give gender-affirming care to people under 18. The new law takes effect immediately. It allows prosecutors to charge health care providers with felonies for performing sex reassignment surgeries on minors, and with misdemeanors for giving gender-affirming medication — like puberty blockers — to trans kids. The Associated Press obtained details on the government’s first-ever national inventory of older forests in advance of their expected public release on Thursday. Someone in Ohio went to bed $252.6 million richer, before taxes, after hitting the Powerball jackpot Wednesday night. The winning ticket was sold at Get Go #3279 in Macedonia and is Ohio’s fourth Powerball jackpot winner since joining the game April 16, 2010. The winner can choose the cash option of $134.7 million. This follows back-to-back Mega Millions jackpots being won on Friday ($483 million) and Monday ($20 million). Both winning tickets were sold in New York.

There's a low-tech remedy for the nitrate pollution affecting waterways in Iowa and elsewhere in the United States. Simple systems called bioreactors and streamside buffers help filter nitrates from rainwater before it can reach streams and rivers. And that's important because the nitrates pollute drinking water, make waterways unfit for fish and humans and fuel the giant dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Search crews have recovered a body from the rubble of a collapsed parking garage in New York City. The body was recovered late Wednesday and turned over to the medical examiner’s office. The victim’s identity wasn’t immediately released.
