Nearly 43,000 people died in U.S. traffic crashes in 2021, the highest number in 16 years, with deaths due to speeding and impaired or distracted driving on the rise. New York regulators have approved 99 new provisional licenses for recreational marijuana dispensaries. The state is trying to speed up the rollout of a legal market that had been impeded by a court ruling. A federal court ruling last fall put retail licensing on hold in some regions, including Brooklyn and the Buffalo area. A first-grade Virginia teacher who was shot and seriously wounded by her 6-year-old student has filed a lawsuit seeking $40 million in damages from Newport News school officials. The lawsuit filed Monday accuses school administrators of gross negligence for allegedly ignoring multiple warnings on the day of the shooting that the boy had a gun and was in a “violent mood.” Abby Zwerner, a 25-year-old teacher at Richneck Elementary School, was shot in the hand and chest on Jan. 6 as she sat at a reading table in her classroom. A report says McDonald's has closed its U.S. offices for a few days as the company prepares to inform corporate employees about layoffs. The Wall Street Journal cited an internal email from the Chicago-based fast-food giant saying U.S. staff and some corporate employees overseas should work from home while the company notifies people of their job status. The Philippine government has identified four new local military areas where rotational batches of American forces with their weapons will be allowed to stay indefinitely despite strong objections from China. WWE and the company that runs Ultimate Fighting Championship will combine to create a $21.4 billion sports entertainment company. A new publicly traded company announced Monday will be formed that houses the UFC and WWE brands, with Endeavor Group Holdings Inc. taking a 51% controlling interest in the new company. Existing WWE shareholders will hold a 49% stake. The new business will be lead by Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel. Vince McMahon, executive chairman at WWE, will serve in the same role at the new company.

The Swiss attorney general’s office says it has opened a probe into the events surrounding embattled bank Credit Suisse, which is to be taken over by rival UBS. Switzerland’s government and financial regulators helped engineer the hastily arranged, $3.25 billion agreement that will leave the country with a single huge global bank. A judge has dismissed a sex abuse case against former acting Alaska Attorney General Clyde “Ed” Sniffen, citing the statute of limitations in place when the alleged abused happened over 30 years ago. The Anchorage Daily News reports the case was thrown out on Friday. It involved allegations that Sniffen sexually abused a then-17-year-old student in 1991 when he was 27 and the alleged victim’s coach at her Anchorage high school. Business sentiment among big Japanese manufacturers worsened in the first quarter of this year. That's according to a Bank of Japan survey of business sentiments called “tankan.” It was the fifth straight decline in manufacturers' sentiments in the quarterly survey. Residents across a wide swath of the U.S. are racing to assess the destruction from fierce storms that spawned possibly dozens of tornadoes from the South and the Midwest into the Northeast. Authorities say about 25 train cars have derailed in northwestern Montana. No injuries or evacuations have been reported after the cars derailed near the town of Paradise along the Clark Fork River on Sunday.
