Surf's up in California, where it's now the official sport

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Let's go surfing now, everybody's learning how," the Beach Boys have been telling us in song since 1962. And if you haven't started listening by now — and you live in California — perhaps it's time you did. On Monday surfing became the official sport of California. So grab a board, catch a wave and again as the Beach Boys like to say, find yourself, "sittin' on top of the world." "I am stoked that surfing is now California's official sport," declared Al Muratsuchi, state assemblyman and a dedicated surfer dude himself... Читать дальше...

Mets no giants, lose in 13th

New York Brandon Crawford's potential inning-ending popup in the 13th was dropped when Mets left fielder Dominic Smith plowed into shortstop Amed Rosario, giving the San Francisco Giants a 2-1 win over New York on Monday night. The Giants had runners at first and third and two outs when Crawford lifted a high pop. Rosario ranged into shallow left field, waved off Smith and was in position for a routine catch. But the bulky Smith, who more often plays first base, came charging in and barged into Rosario. Читать дальше...

Animal crackers break out of their cages

After more than a century behind bars, the beasts on boxes of animal crackers are roaming free. Mondelez International, the parent company of Nabisco, has redesigned the packaging of its Barnum's Animals crackers after relenting to pressure from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA, which has been protesting the use of animals in circuses for more than 30 years, wrote a letter to Mondelez in the spring of 2016 calling for a redesign.

MTV VMAs was a shocking event, for the wrong reasons

NEW YORK (AP) — With most of music industry's top acts absent — from Beyonce to Bruno Mars — the MTV Video Music Awards lacked star power and felt flat, and some of the winners turned heads — for the wrong reasons. Exhibit A: Camila Cabello beat out Drake, Mars, Cardi B, Ariana Grande and Post Malone for artist of the year. "I can't believe this is for me," Cabello said Monday onstage. Neither can we. Cabello achieved the unthinkable later in the show when she took home the top prize — video of the year ... Читать дальше...

Microsoft uncovers more Russian attacks ahead of midterms

Microsoft said Tuesday it has uncovered new Russian hacking attempts targeting U.S. political groups ahead of the midterm elections. The company said that a hacking group tied to the Russian government created fake internet domains that appeared to spoof two American conservative organizations: the Hudson Institute and the International Republican Institute. Three other fake domains were designed to look as if they belonged to the U.S. Senate. Microsoft didn't offer any further description of the fake sites. Читать дальше...

Trump plan rolls back Obama's coal emissions standards

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is set to roll back the centerpiece of President Barack Obama's efforts to slow global warming, the Clean Power Plan that restricts greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants. A plan to be announced in coming days would give states broad authority to determine how to restrict carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. The Environmental Protect Agency announced late Monday that acting administrator Andrew... Читать дальше...

Poll shows support for charter schools, vouchers is growing

WASHINGTON (AP) — Support for charter schools and private school voucher programs has gone up over the past year, with Republicans accounting for much of the increase, according to a survey published Tuesday. The findings by Education Next, a journal published by Harvard's Kennedy School and Stanford University, come as Education Secretary Betsy DeVos promotes alternatives to traditional public schools. Forty-four percent of respondents in the poll conducted in May said they support the expansion of charter schools... Читать дальше...

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bryse Wilson was pitching for his high school team in Hillsborough, North Carolina, barely two years ago. Now, he's 1-0 in the major leagues. Wilson worked five solid innings, becoming the third 20-year-old pitcher to start in his big league debut for Atlanta this season in the Braves' 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. "Never," Wilson said when asked if he could envision being in the major leagues so soon. "I thought I would move up one step at a time. I never expected this." Wilson allowed three hits... Puerto Rico pushes on

South Williamsport, Pa. After a five-inning, 14 strikeout, no-hit performance, Roberto Joubert stepped off the mound and made his way toward the Puerto Rico dugout. An emphatic roar filled Volunteer Stadium, as miniature Puerto Rican flags waved in tandem with fatheads of each player. The Puerto Rico faithful consisted of no more than 60 or 70 people, yet their passion could be felt throughout the 3,000-seat ballpark. Postcard from Saratoga Race Course

Made a new friend at the Spa on Monday. While doing my tour of the backstretch, I happened upon this guy. His name is Deceived and he is 7 years old. His racing days ended in 2015 but he is still on the track as a stable pony for the barn of trainer Leah Gyarmati, who he ran for. Deceived, a New York-bred, ran once during his 12-race career at Saratoga, finishing third in his first start in 2013. He seems to love life in his open-air stall and he loves peppermints. Hard to see, hard to breathe: US West struggles with smoke
