People who are unfit and feeble stand to gain the most from physical exercise, research has shown. Scientists looked at the benefits of physical activity such as increased lifespan and reduced heart disease risk in a group of almost 500,000 study participants. High or low levels of activity made little difference to people at the top end of the fitness scale. Air Malta chairwoman Maria Micallef has described the threat by pilots to intensify industrial action as “callous” because it is putting jobs at risk. Meanwhile Times of Malta is today publishing details of the pilots' wage demands, which equate to an increase of some €50,000 each. In a Talking Point appearing in the newspaper today, Ms Micallef argues that the pilots’ association’s attitude is “unreasonable and self-serving”. Melvyn Lorenzen will miss the first three weeks of Werder Bremen’s pre-season training after being attacked on his own doorstep on Saturday night. The Bundesliga club released a statement yesterday confirming the attack by unidentified individuals on the 21-year-old outside his own home, which left the winger with facial injuries. Barcelona have launched a campaign urging fans to “express their sympathy” in support of forward Lionel Messi after he appealed against a 21-month prison sentence for tax fraud imposed by a Catalan court. Messi and his father, Jorge, were sentenced on Wednesday after a Barcelona court found them both guilty of three counts of defrauding the tax department to the tune of €4.1 million. Enough time has passed for a calm personal assessment on the implications of Brexit. If I were British, I would have voted for my country to remain a member of the EU even if my judgement of the present EU governance is far from positive. Milan are edging closer to the signing of Argentine Mateo Musacchio from Villarreal. La Gazzetta dello Sport said talks are already underway between the two clubs as new Milan coach Vincenzo Montella wants to strengthen his options in defence by bringing the highly-rated 25-year-old to the San Siro. I too think Brexit was a mistake and that many people voted for very negative reasons, including xenophobia and bigotry. However, I object to the vilification and demonisation of the people who voted Leave in Edward Caruana Galizia’s article (‘And thanks for fish and chips’, July 5) as I think it is scapegoating and not directing the blame where it belongs. A 27-year-old motorcylist died this evening when his Honda motorcycle crashed into a wall in the Tal-Qroqq tunnels. The accident happened at about 9.30pm. The man, from Paola, died on the spot while a woman, 24 from Rabat, who was riding pillion was injured and hospitalised. A magisterial inquiry is under way.
