May leads three-horse PM race as Brexit hits pound and property

Home Secretary Theresa May opened up a strong lead today in what is now a three-horse race to become Britain's next prime minister, but the first stage of voting was overshadowed by post-Brexit carnage for property investors and the pound. In symptoms of market concern about the economic impact of leaving the European Union, sterling hit new 31-year lows and three funds investing in British property said they were suspending trading because too many people were rushing to withdraw their money at once. Malta most positive about future of EU

Positivity about the future and the state of the European Union may not be at a high-point right now – except, according to a recent survey, in Malta, which stands out as a pinprick of optimism amid the gloom. Nearly two-thirds of Maltese people surveyed in a recent Europe-wide report on the condition of the EU believed the country was moving in the right direction. This was the highest rate in Europe. In stark contrast, pessimists were in the majority in 20 countries, and across Europe, nearly two-thirds... Читать дальше...

Watch: Johnson, Farage are 'retro-nationalists' who 'abandon ship': Juncker

"They are retro-nationalists, not patriots. Patriots don't abandon ship when the going gets tough. They stay on board." Mr Juncker condemned the lack of planning in London following the UK's Brexit referendum vote. Читать дальше...

Olivier Giroud enjoys proving his detractors wrong

When Oliver Giroud was languishing on the bench at his local club Grenoble in 2006 there was little to suggest he would lead the line for his country against Germany in a European Championship semi-final 10 years later. "My coach told me this: You don't have the level to play in the second division, let alone the first division," Giroud has said. "They didn't play to my strengths and I wasn't given the confidence. It really hurt." The comment was, arguably, what made Giroud into the player he is today. Читать дальше...
