Syrian student Ali Khaled Stouf has to walk down several steps into a hole in the ground to get inside his school – a cave. There for four hours each morning, he studies subjects like Arabic, English, maths and religion, sitting on a rug with dozens of children in the underground space in Tramla, an opposition-held village in Syria’s northwestern Idlib province. “I study in a cave. Mater Dei Hospital management and the police are investigating an incident during which a nurse assaulted an ophthalmologist while he was performing surgery on a patient’s eye, the Times of Malta has learnt. The incident was referred to the police for investigation while the hospital set up its own internal inquiry board to look into the assault. British artist David Hockney has returned to the Royal Academy of Arts with a new exhibition of portraits that offer an insight into his life in Los Angeles and his connections to the art world. The show, David Hockney RA: 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life, is being held at the Sackler Wing at the Royal Academy of Arts and runs until October 2. “He’s intensely interested in people and he loves the company of people and I think bringing all of these people to Los Angeles was a very important thing,” said curator Edith Devaney. Poland midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak has signed a five-year contract with Paris St Germain, the French champions said in a statement yesterday. The 26-year-old Krychowiak, a member of the Poland team who were eliminated by Portugal in the quarter-finals of the European Championship in France. He joins PSG from Spanish side Sevilla, where he played under the guidance of Unai Emery who has now been appointed PSG coach.
