Valletta midfielder Roderick Briffa has been named MFA footballer of the year for season 2015/16. Briffa, who had also won this coveted award in season 2010/11, was instrumental in Valletta's march to the BOV Premier League title. England national team assistant manager Gary Neville has donated €150,000 to local United supporters club to help them buy their current premises in Sta Venera. The announcement of his donation was made during the extraordinary general meeting of the Manchester United supporters Club this evening. The meeting was addressed by club president Joseph Tedesco. UKIP euro-skeptic leader Nigel Farage launched his party's so-called Brexit battle bus in London. Farage rode an open-topped double-decker bus and parked up outside the European Commission's building to declare that June 23 will be Britain's 'Independence Day' if the country votes to leave the European Union in the referendum. Oscar-winning film director Sofia Coppola is taking a break from movies to direct a new production of Verdi's La Traviata at the Rome Opera House. Coppola will work alongside fashion designer Valentino who is doing the costumes. A man has been charged with second-degree murder after his eight-month-old daughter died in his overheated car in Mississippi. Grenada Assistant Police Chief George Douglas said 25-year-old Joshua Blunt is being held in custody after his daughter Shania Caradine was found unconscious in the overheated car outside a restaurant where he worked on Thursday afternoon. The reeds at the bottom of the valley at Sta Marija Estate in Mellieha were set on fire by a person who was seen pouring inflammable liquid and setting them alight. Reader Mark Vella Bardon sent in the video above and said there was a similar fire in the same area on May 7. Unlike today, the day had not been windy then and the flames subsided. South Koreans, Asia's biggest per capita alcohol consumers, can now soothe themselves after a big night out with hangover-fighting ice cream. A convenience store chain has launched the Gyeondyo-bar, which translates as "hang in there" and according to the company is the first ice cream bar marketed specifically to combat the after-effects of alcohol consumption. Former France winger David Ginola is recovering in hospital after undergoing a quadruple heart bypass surgery, French and British media reported. Top Air Malta executives have expressed serious concerns about the government’s handling of negotiations with Alitalia fearing that the national airline may be turned into a feeder airline serving Italy’s national air carrier. Christian officials have launched historic restoration work at the Tomb of Jesus in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Jerusalem site where tradition holds Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. A man who damaged a truck with a mattock during an argument at a quarry was conditionally discharged by a court and ordered to pay for the damages. Marius Camilleri, 55, of Qormi who is a truck driver with a construction company, had been charged over an incident which happened in April 2010. The share index extended yesterday’s decline by a further 0.08 per cent to 4,548.199 points – the lowest level in the last eight trading sessions – on weak volumes. A €2.6 million seed testing project was inaugurated by Parliamentary Secretary Roderick Galdes today. The project, co-financed by the European Union, incorporates a visitors’ centre and a new seed testing lab. The testing will take place at the Plant Biotechnology Centre in Attard. Gozitan farmers will need to get creative within the boundaries of EU rules if they’re to survive as a profitable sector, MEP Alfred Sant said today. Promoting authentic origin of produce from Gozo could be one such way of making its farmers more competitive, though Dr Sant cautioned that a concrete list of authentic origin products would have to be drafted if mistakes made in the past, most notably in tomato production, were to be avoided.
