Members of the cast and crew of Brazilian film Aquarius staged a protest in support of President Dilma Rousseff on the Cannes red carpet today. Mexican president proposes same-sex marriage

Mexico's president today proposed allowing same sex marriage nationally, the latest in a series of progressive policies in a traditionally conservative country. The presidency said on Twitter that President Enrique Pena Nieto had "announced the signing of a reform initiative which includes the recognition of the right to get married without any form of discrimination." Maltese tourists are less likely to use the internet to book flights and holiday accommodation than their European counterparts, new figures show.Two out of every three air trips within the European Union in 2014 were booked online, Eurostat figures have revealed. The statistics also revealed that more than 50 per cent of all accommodation reservations across the EU that year came from online bookings.But while 90 per cent of Finnish people use the internet to book their flights, in Malta a shade under 60 per cent do. Libyan unity government forces retake Misrata checkpoint

Libyan military forces said today they had recaptured one of the main checkpoints south of the city of Misrata from Islamic State, reversing some of the gains the militant group made earlier this month. Three members of the armed forces were killed and 10 wounded in a mine explosion as they took control of the checkpoint at Abu Grain, said Mohamed al-Gasri, a spokesman for an operation room set up by Libya's U.N.-backed unity government. Tourism Minister puts his foot down over eco-tax

Racing camels test out pressure suits

A camel in a garment that looks like a swimming suit is an odd sight - unless happen to be in a desert just outside Abu Dhabi. Camels there are being used to test out pressure suits made by a Finnish textile company. Three bombs in Baghdad kill 70 in worst violence so far this year

At least 72 people were killed and more than 140 wounded by three bombings in Baghdad today, police and medical sources said, extending the deadliest spate of attacks in the Iraqi capital so far this year. Islamic State claimed one suicide bombing which killed 38 people and wounded over 70 in a marketplace in the northern, mainly Shi'ite Muslim district of al-Shaab. France to use anti-drone technology at Euro 2016

Schembri’s BVI company held $725,091 in 'various investments'

Keith Schembri said yesterday that his company in the British Virgin Islands “held various investments”. The Panama Papers show that, in 2014, Mr Schembri’s BVI company held cash assets amounting to $725,091. Doping: 31 athletes risk Rio Olympics ban, says IOC

Thirty one athletes from six sports could be banned from this year's Rio de Janeiro Olympics after 454 doping samples were re-tested from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the IOC said today. A statement from the International Olympic Committee said its Executive Board had stepped up the fight against drugs cheats and the re-tests had been carried out in conjunction with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and international federations. People smugglers made over €4.4 billion ($5 billion) from the wave of migration into southern Europe last year, a report by international crime-fighting agencies Interpol and Europol said today. Gozitan cleared of fraud in bizarre witchcraft case

A man who got paid €3,000 to cast a spell on a woman involved in an extra-marital affair with a married man, with the aim of reuniting her with her own husband, was today acquitted of fraud, by a Gozitan court.
